One last time. 24 races and 6 Sprints — and we are at the final edition of this year's Race Recap. While the Max Verstappen wrapped up the driver's championship with relative ease in Las Vegas, the battle for the constructors' went all the way down to the final race in Abu Dhabi. Despite their best efforts, the Ferraris weren't quick enough to challenge for the win, which is what McLaren needed to bring the title home for the first time since 1998. "Lando, we can finally be World Champions!" When I first started watching the sport in 2019, I gravitated towards being a McLaren fan. I was always drawn towards their journey of climbing back from the mid-fielders to becoming top contenders. Fast forward to the end of 2024, they pulled off the massive feat of topping the constructors' standings since 1998. It's a remarkable achievement and testament to all the hard work they've done in these past few years since Zack Brown took over as CEO of McLaren Racing in 2018. As a Papaya fan, I'm thrilled about the opportunity to catch up with Rachel Lavery, a Senior Technical Analyst at McLaren Racing. The whole pitch for this interview really started because we both graduated from Queen's University Belfast. 📝 𝐀𝐛𝐮 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢 𝐆𝐏: 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 📝 After 26 years of waiting, the constructors' trophy will finally head to Woking, and with that, the 2024 season is officially over! McLaren finally wrapped up the constructors' championship after Ferrari was unable to overhaul them, thanks to Lando Norris' victory in Yas Marina. The race also marked the end of Lewis Hamilton's legendary tenure with Mercedes. Here's what else happened in the finale: 🤯DNFs in their last races: Despite making his second Q3 of the year, Valtteri Bottas' last race with Sauber and possibly in F1 ends with retirement. This is also the same Franco Colapinto who will lose his race seat next season. ❓ Pérez's future is finally uncertain: After much speculation throughout the season, Red Bull's Sergio Pérez finally admits that he is uncertain about his future after a retirement in the race. 6️⃣ 6th belongs to Alpine: Alpine's Pierre Gasly was thrilled to take sixth from Haas in the WCC after outscoring Nico Hülkenberg. 2️⃣4️⃣ Round 24: Abu Dhabi 2️⃣4️⃣ Well, that's it, folks. We're almost close to the finishing line. The season finale will see the F1 circus head to Abu Dhabi, where the race will be held at the Yas Marina circuit. Yas Marina is well-known to be the season finale for a frequent number of F1 events. In fact, the track debuted as the 2009's F1 season finale, with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel winning from teammate Mark Webber and the already-crowned 2009 champion Jenson Button. So, what should we look out for this weekend? 👀 Ahead of the 2024 race, here's a little reminder of what happened last season: 🏆 A triumph end to a dominant season: Max Verstappen took his fourth consecutive win in Abu Dhabi to seal a year where he broke numerous records, such as winning 19 races, scoring 21 podiums, and leading over 1000 laps throughout a season. ⚡100 IQ move by Charles Leclerc: The Ferrari driver gave up track position to Sergio Perez in an attempt to lift Ferrari above Mercedes into second position in the constructors' standings. 🌟 The battle between Alpha Tauri and Williams: Alex Albon helped Williams to seal seventh place in the constructors' championship. 📝 𝐐𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐆𝐏: 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 📝 Saturday's one-place grid penalty wasn't enough to stop the newly crowned four-time world champion. Meanwhile, McLaren couldn't wrap up the constructors' championship after Ferrari managed to outscore them, meaning Abu Dhabi will be the final showdown to see which team will take the crown. But on the flip side, Sauber finally got their first points on the board after 23 races! So, if you missed out on the action, here's what else happened during the race: ⛔ Everyone gets penalties: Plenty of drivers were penalized by the stewards, with Lando Norris receiving a 10-second stop/go penalty for failing to slow down under yellow flags. 😵💫 Mercedes is inconsistent again: After taking a surprise top haul of points last time out, Mercedes struggled in the race, with George Russell finishing fourth and Lewis Hamilton out of the points. 💪 Puncture can’t stop me: Ferrari's Carlos Sainz picked up a puncture, and a slow stop sent him down, tumbling to P10. 2️⃣3️⃣ Round 23: Qatar 2️⃣3️⃣ With the driver's champion crowned, teams are certainly giving their all to cement their standings in the constructors' championship. This week, F1 heads to Qatar, where the race will be held on the Lusail International Circuit. Located on the outskirts of Doha, the track was built in 2004 in preparation for hosting Qatar's first-ever MotoGP event. It debuted in 2021, with Qatar signing a 10-year deal to host the sport from 2023. This circuit is mainly dominated by medium- and high-speed corners, considering that it was designed primarily to suit motorcycle racing. So, what should we look out for this weekend? 👀 Ahead of the 2024 race, here's a little reminder of what happened last season: 🏆 A third world championship for Max: The Dutchman's second-place finish in the Sprint race proved enough to confirm him as the sport's world champion for the third successive season. 🔥Qatar brings the heat: The FIA had to impose a maximum stint length for tyres due to extreme temperatures following the Qatar race weekend. 🌟 Oscar's first sprint win in Formula One: The Australian crossed the line to secure his maiden Formula 1 victory during Saturday's Sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix. 📝 𝐋𝐚𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐏: 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 📝 The first race of our final triple-header didn’t disappoint! The championship is officially signed, sealed, and delivered to none other than Max Verstappen, who took his fourth title under the lights of Sin City. This means Lando Norris’ hopes of a championship are officially over. Elsewhere, Mercedes finally came alive and took their first 1–2 of the year, with George Russell securing his third career victory. Here’s what else happened during the race: 😐Nothing’s going right for Pérez: While his teammate spectacularly took home the title, Pérez only managed to take tenth after a Q1 exit. ⚔️ A bizarre incident: A strategy error cost Carlos Sainz a potential P2 finish. 📉 It went downhill fast: After taking a surprise podium in Brazil and a P3 in qualifying, Pierre Gasly’s evening ended abruptly with a loss of engine power. Just a few hours ago, Formula One (specifically Formula One Management) announced that it had reached an agreement in principle with General Motors (GM) to support bringing GM/Cadillac to the F1 grid as the 11th team in 2026. Cadillac, a division of the American motoring giant General Motors, is expected to be powered by Ferrari before it develops its engines. Given how strong Ferrari's momentum has been in the later part of the 2024 season, it'll be interesting to see whether Cadillac and GM can leverage this before developing their in-house power units for 2028 and beyond. This move comes after F1 initially rejected the bid, which was headed up by Andretti (owned by former F1 driver Michael Andretti), who has since stepped down as CEO of the organisation. Interestingly, according to F1, they state: "Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors and its partners at TWG Global regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024. Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the eleventh team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process and will provide further updates in due course."
