We are thrilled to announce that we’ve been selected as one of the grantees for the OCEAN Grant Programme! 🪸🥳 Sabah, Malaysia is located within the Coral Triangle, an area of the world's oceans recognised by scientists as having the highest #biodiversity. The project is part of ongoing efforts to empower local #communities on Larapan Island, Sabah to participate in #marine resource management. This project will establish a Community Protocol (CP) on Larapan Island to empower #indigenous peoples and #local communities to manage their resources, protect their cultural and traditional practices, and secure their customary rights to the marine area surrounding the island. It provides "proof of concept" for an approach to ensure local communities have legal support to their efforts to implement management and #conservation of their marine resources. Together, we can inspire change and build a sustainable future for our oceans. Let’s continue working hand in hand to protect what matters most. 💙 Join us in making a difference: Whether through partnerships, support, or spreading the word, your contribution matters.

🎊🎉🎏 We are delighted to announce the awarding of 20 grants under the OCEAN Grant Programme. 🎊🎉🎏 🐠 17 Community Grants – to increase the capacity of local communities to tackle marine and poverty issues, by delivering local solutions to local problems. 🦐 3 Partnership Grants – to deliver lasting change to the marine environment and livelihoods of coastal communities through the delivery of solutions at scale. Grantees were selected from 694 applications from 96 countries around the world. The successful projects cover 13 countries across five continents. Check out our website to find out more. We can't wait to get started! oceangrants.org.uk Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office NIRAS International Consulting #OCEANgrants

In response to the Sabah state government's plan on the Blue Economy agenda, Reef Check Malaysia was invited by the Sabah Young Business and Industry Leaders Network (Sybil) to share about our programmes in Sabah during their Blue Economy Workshop. The workshop was hosted by DHI Water & Environment and led by its task force chairperson Mr. Jack Lee Vun Zac. About 25 people attended the workshop which included a welcome speech by Datuk James Wong (President of SYBIL). It was followed by a briefing by Mr. Jack about the Blue Economy in Sabah, a presentation by Sabah Ports representative Capt. Nadel Veldes on “Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd Blue Ocean Sustainability Initiatives". Our colleague, Nadhirah Mohd Rifai presented on "Building Resilient Coastal Economies: Integrating Community-Based Conservation with Sustainable Economic Development". It was followed by a discussion to gather feedback and suggestions on the 4 pillars outlined in the Sabah Blue Economy agenda. It's a privilege to be participating in the COP 16 biodiversity conference in Cali, Colombia. After my first day here it's already clear that there is a huge emphasis on funding for biodiversity conservation - from governments, from corporations and from various multilateral and philanthropic funding agencies. There is a recognised gap in funding for biodiversity conservation which is around US$ 700 billion a year between now and 2030. Hopefully we are going to hear a bit about where it is coming from!!! In a Biodiversity and Business forum this morning, Malaysia's environment Minister, YB Nik Nazmi, spoke about efforts the Malaysian government is making to engage with corporates in this conversation - sounds like a good start!

Recently, our Programme Manager, Nadhirah Mohd Rifai participated in the Blue Economy: Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment forum. She mentioned that the inclusion of local communities is vital in preserving marine ecosystems while also "benefitting from sustainable economic opportunities of the Blue Economy." “Our programme’s cornerstone is the establishment of the Community Marine Conservation Groups. To date, we have six such groups, with four based in Semporna, namely the Kulapuan, Larapan, Selakan Marine Conservation Groups and Mabul Climate Youths. “These groups are at the forefront of local efforts, participating in various activities aimed at preserving marine ecosystems,” she told a forum on Blue Economy: Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment, here, Sunday. Our team in Mersing is working hard to ensure the small communities in remote islands are not forgotten. They have been working with them to manage their waste better. Read more below ⬇

We have been busy! Remote islands with small communities often suffer from under-provision of basic services such as waste management. Through our Cintai Kepulauan Mersing project, supported by MISC Group Heart of the Ocean programme, UNEP COBSEA and SC Johnson, we have established recycling programmes on three islands - Pulau Sibu, Pulau Tinggi and Pulau Aur in Mersing. Over the past few weeks, we worked closely with the local communities to collect recyclables and gather feedback to further improve the systems. Since 2022, we’ve collected over 2,000 kilograms of plastic bottles, metal cans, and glass bottles - waste that would have otherwise been burned or improperly disposed on the islands. Although there’s still much to do and room for improvement, the recycling programme was developed through extensive community consultation, which was key to securing community buy-in and setting it up for long-term success.
