Exquisite Ming Dynasty Architecture: Zhihua Temple

Zhihua Temple was built in the Ming Dynasty. It was originally the family temple of Wang Zhen, a eunuch who was favored by the Ming Emperor Yingzong. Later, the emperor named it "Baoyun Zhihua Temple." It is the best-preserved Ming Dynasty wooden structure in Beijing. In 1994, the Beijing Museum of Cultural Exchange was established here. Zhihua Temple is located at the east end of Lumicang Hutong. It is a beautiful ancient building hidden in the alleys. The central axis has a mountain gate, Zhihua Gate, Zhihua Hall, Tathagata Hall, and Great Compassion Hall. The first courtyard has a bell tower and a drum tower. The second courtyard has the Great Wisdom Hall and the Tibetan Hall on the left and right. The layout is neat. Recommended attractions: ✴️ The revolving wheel in the Tibetan Hall is exquisitely carved. The elephants, lions, sheep, Bodhisattvas, Vajras, and Garudas are lifelike. The Vairocana Buddha on the top is solemn and mysterious. ✴️ The three statues of Shakyamuni, Brahma, and Indra in the Tathagata Hall, especially the exquisite patterns on their clothes. ✴️ The mural of "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings of the Underworld" in Zhihua Hall. The mural has many characters, a rigorous composition, bright colors, and smooth lines. ✴️ The caisson in the Tibetan Hall is hidden above the revolving wheel. The top is a ceiling with the six-character mantra as the theme. The surroundings are decorated with gold cloud patterns in red, green, and blue. ✴️ The ceiling paintings in the Tathagata Hall are complicated, with a calm color tone, exquisite composition, and a combination of floral patterns and Sanskrit. ✴️ Jing music originated from the ceremonial music of the Ming Dynasty court. It is the only ancient music in China that has been passed down through generations. There are live performances in the morning and afternoon, but I missed them because I arrived late. Tickets are CNY 20 (CNY 10 for discounts), which is worth it. It is recommended to take public transportation or shared bicycles, as it is difficult to park in the alleys.
