“The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive. That is why we put these stories in each other’s memories. This is how people care for themselves.” (Barry Lopez)
From Oshodi to the TEDx stage. Last month one of our champions Ayomide, took the stage at TEDxTrinityUYaba and shared his incredible story of growth and transformation through Chess in Slums in Africa. Through chess, Ayomide found a way to build his confidence, sharpen his mind, and discover his potential. And now, he’s standing on one of the world’s biggest stages, sharing his story of growth and transformation. Ayomide’s story is proof that no matter where you come from, your story doesn’t have to be defined by your circumstances. With the right opportunities and support, the sky is the limit. At Chess in Slums, we are beyond excited to see one of our own stand on a global stage. This moment gives us hope and reminds us that with every child we reach, there’s a new opportunity to change a life. To support us in continuing this work and giving more children the opportunity to achieve their dreams, your contribution matters. With your support, we can continue to open doors, break barriers, and help children like Ayomide unlock their full potential. This is Day One. #ChessInSlumsAfrica #UnveilingRoyaltyInEveryChild #ChessinNigeria #TundeOnakoya

Powering Progress Through Chess: Bridging Communities and Schools At Chess in Slums Africa, we believe in the transformative power of chess to unite, inspire, and empower. This vision came to life with the Powering Progress Through Chess tournament, a vibrant competition that brought together secondary schools across Lagos and the talented children from the communities we've impacted. Students from diverse backgrounds sat across the chessboard, exchanging not just moves but perspectives, ideas, and stories. For our champions from underserved communities, this was a chance to showcase the skills they’ve honed and the determination they embody. For the school participants, it was an opportunity to learn from peers who have triumphed against odds, proving that brilliance knows no boundaries. The tournament was a testament to our commitment to creating opportunities and breaking barriers through chess. It demonstrated how the game can be a powerful tool for fostering inclusion, progress, and a brighter future for all. As the pieces moved and the games unfolded, we witnessed connections being forged, lessons being learned, and progress being powered—one move at a time. The Lagos State Schools Chess Championship, powered by NNPC-SNEPCo Shell partnership with Chess in Slums Africa, brought together 30 teams from secondary schools across Lagos. The teams competed in five intense rounds, with the team accumulating the highest points emerging as the winner. The tournament, tagged "Powering Progress Through Chess," aimed to highlight the transformative power of chess as a tool for education and empowerment. A key highlight for us was the outstanding performance of Ogbonna Confidence, a member of the Chess in Slums Africa team, who emerged as the Best Performing Female of the tournament. Additionally, the Chess in Slums Africa team secured an impressive 5th place overall. We like to extend our congratulations to all the winners and appreciation to all the schools who participated. Your efforts and enthusiasm for chess was truly inspiring, and every team contributed to making this event a success. This event would not have been possible without the support of NNPC-SNEPCo Shell, whose commitment to education and youth development made this event a reality. Special appreciation goes to Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls and the Nigeria Chess Federation for their invaluable contributions to the tournament's success. The Lagos State Schools Chess Championship showcased the unifying and empowering potential of chess, proving that with the right opportunities, every child has the ability to shine. Congratulations to all participants, and we look forward to many more impactful editions. #ChessInSlumsAfrica #UnveilingRoyaltyInEveryChild #ChessinNigeria #TundeOnakoya
