"We Need a 'Tectonic' Shift to Achieve #UHC.." At the roundtable organised by the Nigeria UHC Forum to commemorate the 2024 UHC, the theme for 2024 UHC Day, Health: It’s on the Government, was considered an opportunity to forge a consensus on sustained prioritisation of the health of Nigerians. The roundtable featured a presentation from the National Health Insurance Authority of Nigeria DG Dr. kelechi Ohiri highlighting the strategic vision of #NHIA and its accomplishments in the last year. It is heartening to note that the #NHIA has been able to enrol an additional 2 million Nigerians in the last year, and it has suppased its target for the year. A keynote presentation from Olumide Okunola of the World Bank emphasised the need for a ‘tectonic’ shift in our approach to health financing as health should be on the government and not on the house. He urged the stakeholders to participate actively in the ongoing fiscal reform debate in order to transform the revenue generation profile of the government, which will expand fiscal space for improving health financing and development financing at large. Panellists at the panel discussion session, including Hon. Commissioners for Health of Yobe and Nasarawa States, expounded on the importance of political support and how it has helped them to change the health indices and expand health insurance coverage to the poor and vulnerable residents in their states. Innovative options for health financing were also appraised, and pockets of success stories on transformation of health facility standards were showcased. The Nigeria UHC Forum also unveiled its plan to track the service coverage index and financial protection at the sub-national level in order to objectively measure UHC progress in Nigeria. In order to move from rhetoric to action, the Nigeria UHC Forum inaugurated three committees, namely the innovative financing committee, facility standards committee and the #UHC monitoring group, to ensure we actively mobilise funds from innovative mechanisms, replicate best practices in terms of facility standards and put in place a robust mechanism for tracking our UHC progress using internationally recognised indicators. The roundtable ended with a press briefing. #UHCDay #UHC2030 Magda Robalo National Health Insurance Authority of Nigeria Gaza.
