Making inclusive health markets a reality
Over ons
PharmAccess is an international NGO that believes in doing healthcare better. Focusing on sub-Saharan Africa, we work to improve healthcare markets so they deliver for all so people can access better care, live healthier lives, and reach their full potential. With headquarters in Amsterdam and most of its staff based in four country offices across Africa, PharmAccess is an international NGO with a history of reimagining what is possible. We challenge the notion that exclusion from healthcare is an inevitable consequence of living in poorer countries and identify the opportunities and partners – both private and public, needed to bring about transformation. This means mobilizing private and public resources, measuring and improving quality of services, and reaching even the most excluded people with financing options to pay for care. This approach was instilled by our founder Dr Joep Lange, a world leading aids researcher who went against the status quo in 2001 when he proved that working with the private sector could play a critical role in delivering life-saving antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS treatment in Africa. PharmAccess has since evolved to embrace other opportunities for inclusive healthcare, with a particular focus on what the digital revolution can deliver. PharmAccess aims to be an innovator and catalyst for practical changes that can be scaled up. Initiatives such as SafeCare equip healthcare providers with clinical standards for quality improvement that investors and patients can trust. The Medical Credit Fund drives more money into the system - it offers loans to clinics to stimulate growth and encourage new ways of financing healthcare. We use mobile health platforms to develop a new model to make healthcare work for everyone. PharmAccess believes that better functioning healthcare markets are key to advancing a number of the Sustainable Development Goal’s, in particular the targets relating to the realization of Universal Health Coverage.

How African role models are driving economic transformation across the continent— Ghana's NHIS story When one African country makes progress—whether in healthcare, economic resilience or education—it inspires others and shows that real change is achievable. Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), celebrating its 21st anniversary this month, is a shining example. Each month, I’ll share a story about African initiatives that rarely make global headlines but show significant development impact. In 2003, despite expert warnings about limited funds, Ghana launched the NHIS to make healthcare accessible to all. To finance it, the country introduced a 2.5% health insurance levy, along with contributions from both formal and informal sectors. Ghana is not the wealthiest country in sub-Saharan Africa and is currently facing economic challenges like 24% inflation. However, it stands out for its strong commitment to providing healthcare for all. The NHIS, funded locally, now covers nearly 60% of Ghana’s 33 million people. The NHIS has faced challenges such as high healthcare costs, payment delays and quality issues. However, it is addressing these through partnerships with Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), PharmAccess and local researchers. Support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken), through PharmAccess, has been crucial to this collaboration. The resilience of Ghana's NHIS demonstrates the power of political leadership, local ownership and development cooperation. Many sub-Saharan African countries now look to Ghana for inspiration on driving progress in healthcare access from within. Continued investment in development cooperation is key to building on progress by role models like Ghana. #universalhealthcoverage #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #SDGs #healthfinancing #healthiswealth #developmentcooperation #digitalisation #digitalhealth #healthcareinnovation

Last night we had the pleasure of hosting our Netherlands-based partners at our annual partner event. It was an evening where our visiting Country Directors and partners had the chance to reflect on the progress made over the last year and the vast potential that #data and #digitaltechnology possess to help accelerate progress toward #universalhealthcarecoverage. Looking back at what we have achieved over the last year and what we have planned for the next, we realize that none of this would be possible without you, our partners. So, from PharmAccess, thank you to all our partners who make dreaming big possible – because the impossible is possible when you care! #uhc #digitalhealth #healthforall Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Nicole Spieker Njide Ndili Maxwell Antwi Dr Wasunna Owino Heri Marwa

As we mark #NCDWeek, PharmAccess is proud to spotlight our ongoing collaboration with Sanofi's Global Health Unit and the Wizara ya Afya Tanzania in #Zanzibar, where we are tackling the growing burden of cardio-metabolic diseases like #diabetes and #hypertension. Together, we have developed an integrated, #patientcentered care model that empowers individuals to better manage their health through digital tools, group support, and remote care. This innovative approach not only enhances patient outcomes but is setting the stage for sustainable, scalable healthcare solutions. With 600 patients already enrolled in our program, we are building on Zanzibar's strong community networks and the support of local governments to expand this model. Our ultimate goal is clear: to create accessible, better quality healthcare solutions that address #NCDs in Zanzibar. As we continue to innovate, PharmAccess remains committed to improving access to care and providing sustainable health solutions for communities across sub-Saharan Africa. #LeadOnNCDs #ActOnNCDs #Sanofi #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth #ChronicDiseases #AfricaHealth
