The Power of Restorative Justice With Teresa Njoroge and Hilary Pennington In today’s #OnWhatMatters episode, Teresa Njoroge, founder and CEO of Clean Start Solutions, and Ford’s Hilary Pennington discuss helping people who have experienced Kenya's criminal justice system find dignity and hope through new employment opportunities. Teresa and Hilary consider how social enterprises like Clean Start Solutions, which works to empower women affected by the criminal justice system, can contribute to a more just and equitable society by focusing on rehabilitation, reintegration, and social inclusion. Teresa opens up about her remarkable journey from wrongful imprisonment to criminal justice reform advocacy and how she is advising the next generation of leaders and community organizers. #BlackHistoryMonth Learn more about Clean Start Solutions at: https://lnkd.in/eRKjSHNz

Around the world, we make grants that support the visionary people and organizations who work to challenge inequality.
About us
The Ford Foundation is a global, grant-making philanthropy that works to disrupt inequality in all its forms. We believe in the inherent dignity of all people. But around the world, too many people are excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. In addressing this reality, we are guided by a vision of social justice—a world in which all individuals, communities, and peoples work toward the protection and full expression of their human rights; are active participants in the decisions that affect them; share equitably in the knowledge, wealth, and resources of society; and are free to achieve their full potential. Across eight decades, our mission has been to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. We work in 11 regional offices around the world and support programs in more than 50 countries.

#MakeItCount: The LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund Los Angeles’ arts community is one of the most vibrant in the world, with filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, writers, and other creatives who have inspired and entertained millions of people. Last month, in response to the devastating Southern California wildfires, a coalition of major arts organizations and funders united to support artists and arts workers who have been impacted. The LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, led by the J. Paul Getty Trust, will provide critical emergency relief to workers in all creative disciplines who have lost their residences, studios, and livelihoods, or have otherwise been affected by the fires. The fund has raised $12 million so far, and participants include the Getty, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Mellon Foundation, the Gagosian Gallery, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw’s Hearthland Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. Impacted artists can apply for a grant at the Center for Cultural Innovation. “This collaborative spirit was instantly activated,” Michael Govan, LACMA’s director and chief executive, told the New York Times. “It is kind of a landmark thing that LA, which is so scattered, is pulling together so quickly. I don’t know that there is a precedent for that.” Ford also provided core support for the LA Fire Department Foundation Emergency Wildfire Fund, which supports Los Angeles firefighters with equipment, tools, and supplies. The American #workplace is in crisis. In 2024, Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace Report quantified what everyone already knew: 33 percent of U.S. workers are “engaged,” 51 percent are “not engaged,” and 16 percent are “actively disengaged.” Looking only at those numbers, you’d be forgiven for wondering whether there was some sort of collective, corporate effort to make Americans hate what they do for a living. As Charlie Munger famously said, “Show me the incentives, and I’ll show you the outcome.” Across centuries, political divides and academic disciplines, one idea remains clear: quality jobs are the foundation of thriving markets, strong economies and healthy societies Read more: https://lnkd.in/eMwEy_28 By Roy Swan, Ford Foundation

“Traditional to me is the best of our heritage. Central to this is the vision of creating and contributing to sustainable livelihoods for artisans and craftspeople, so that the craft tradition stays alive, inclusive and accessible.” - Bimla Bissell Bimla Bissell’s life and legacy continue to inspire many, particularly women aspiring to break barriers and contribute to society meaningfully. When her husband John Bissell, decided to stay in India after moving from the US on assignment with the Ford Foundation to research the Indian cottage industries, she became his ally in setting up the iconic artisanal brand FabIndia in 1960. Bimla played a key role in connecting India’s artisans to wider markets while preserving traditions and promoting dignified livelihoods. Her commitment to making craft traditions accessible and inclusive continues to shape industries and communities today. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ecSUkumP 📸: World Bank Group/Giuseppe Franchini

When Indigenous peoples and local communities (IP and LC) have secure rights and adequate resources to manage their lands, they are able to continue traditional practices that are invaluable in addressing climate change. More than a third of the world’s intact forests are located on IP and LC’s land—yet less than 1% of global climate funding reaches them directly. That’s why IP and LCs have begun launching their own ambitious funds and grantmaking programs. These leaders—many of them Ford grantees—are harnessing their expertise to channel financial resources directly toward communities working to strengthen collective tenure rights, protect forests, advance gender equity, promote food security, and more. #IndigenousFinance #ForestTenure #ClimateAction #ClimateFinance Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dqn53yQS
