“The average Nigerian does not live past 52, and the average African does not live beyond 64. In comparison to the life expectancy in places like Europe, Canada and other more advanced countries, they are hedging at about 80 years.” - Saadatu Falila Hamu In her opening remarks, Gatefield’s board co-chair explains what is driving our theme for this year’s summit and why we must do more to extend the longevity of life in Africa. #GatefieldHealthSummit #Beyond65

On Day 2, the final day of the Gatefield Health Summit 2024, we issued a clear call to action on addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria. This call emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms in the healthcare landscape, urging the government to establish a diabetes drug subsidy fund, financed through taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages. The day began with the screening of "The Quiet Epidemic: Diabetes in Nigeria," which exposed the unbearable costs of managing NCDs like diabetes. Testimonies from patients and advocates, including former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, highlighted the importance of early detection, proper management, and lifestyle changes for effectively managing the condition. We also presented a study titled “Impact of Inflation on Affordability and Adherence to Anti-diabetics,” which revealed a troubling rise in the annual cost of diabetes management to over one million naira in 2024—nearly double that of the previous year—equating to almost 700% of the annual income for Nigeria's most vulnerable citizens. Other key sessions included: - PHC Systems as a Frontier for NCD Prevention, where experts discussed the importance of supply chain management and the need for well-trained healthcare workers capable of managing chronic NCDs like diabetes. - A Special Presentation on the Impact of Air Quality on Health. - Case Studies on South Africa’s Health Promotion Levy, empowering advocates with insights from successful campaigns. The day ended on a high note with a musical performances, leaving us all energized and inspired for the future. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to today’s success. Stay tuned for more insights and highlights from the summit! #GatefieldHealthSummit #Beyond65

Day 1 of the Gatefield Health Summit was an eye opening start to an important conversation on public health. We focused on one of the most pressing yet often overlooked challenges facing Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa today, non-communicable diseases (NCDs). These diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, account for 29% of deaths in Nigeria and 40% across Africa. As highlighted in the discussions, NCDs have quietly become the leading cause of death for adults in the region, yet they often don’t receive the urgent attention they deserve. A key moment from today was the launch of the"LIVE WELL" strategy, our new health strategy aimed at increasing life expectancy across Africa by addressing the root causes of NCDs. This strategy focuses on promoting healthier lifestyle choices, reducing the consumption of harmful products like sugar, salt, alcohol, and tobacco, encouraging more physical activity, improving air quality, and rethinking how we approach mental health. Through awareness, advocacy and preventive healthcare, we aim to make healthier living more accessible to all. However, implementing these solutions will require more than just individual effort. The need for support from policymakers and all stakeholders was a major theme throughout the day. Fiscal policies like taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages and tobacco have the potential to drive widespread change, making it easier for communities to adopt healthier habits while generating much-needed funds for healthcare. Public health challenges of this scale demand bold policy interventions, and our strategy calls for collective action to ensure that no one is left behind. Tomorrow, we continue these important conversations, focusing on how we can put these strategies into action and create lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to today’s success. We look forward to what Day 2 will bring! #GatefieldHealthSummit #Beyond65
