On #WorldPneumoniaDay, we’re celebrating 8 meaningful strides toward increasing access to medical oxygen in low-resource settings—progress made possible by partners working together, their incredible grit, and our funder’s belief in the work. 🎉 This story is a testament to the power of unlocking impact as a collective: by combining expertise, fostering innovation, building partnerships, and testing quickly, the CoLab approach can unlock impact that none of us could achieve alone. According to World Health Organization, pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death for children worldwide, killing more than 725,000 children under the age of five each year. Medical oxygen is one of the ways that many of these children’s lives can be saved. However, in many parts of the world, especially low-resource settings, it is often unreliable, or completely unavailable. At the UK International Development funded Oxygen CoLab, we recognise that tackling this issue is complex — it is one that demands collective experience and insights. Our work over the past four years has shown that expanding oxygen access requires multiple approaches that target different parts of the oxygen ecosystem, made possible through partnerships and collaboration. Here’s how the connections within the CoLab have moved the needle: 🛠️ Recognizing that standard oxygen devices often fail in harsh, low-resource settings, the CoLab worked with strategic partners like UNICEF to shape the Target Product Profile (TPP) that guides the development of durable, context-specific concentrators. 📖 To empower health facilities in making informed choices, the CoLab partnered with ECRI and LabTest Certification Inc. to provide rigorous, real-world performance data on oxygen devices through the Oxygen Concentrator Directory. 🔄 By piloting Oxygen-as-a-Service (O2aaS), HealthPort, FREO2 Foundation Australia, ICChange - Innovative Canadians for Change, Mediquip, Access Oxygen, and Sanrai Group continue to explore how facilities can receive oxygen reliably, ensuring supply goes alongside maintenance, training, and support. "Every year, pneumonia claims over 2 million lives, including more than 500,000 children." One of the most crucial treatments—oxygen—is often out of reach in areas where it’s needed most. The Oxygen CoLab, as part of a growing network of partners, is dedicated to changing this reality by advancing fit-for-purpose concentrators and testing Oxygen-as-a-Service (O2aaS) models in low-resource settings. By approaching oxygen as an ongoing service rather than a one-time solution, O2aaS could be one way of providing sustainable access to oxygen, in turn reducing preventable pneumonia deaths. In collaboration with evidence leaders at Karolinska Institutet, University of Melbourne, and Makerere University, the CoLab is evaluating O2aaS models across five countries, gathering essential insights into what works best in different types of low-resource contexts.
