It was an amazing time of sharing at the Dog Walk/Show of the 60th Annual Congress of NVMA (Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association) yesterday morning in the city of Jos, Nigeria, where our founder, Dr. Sunday Agbonika DVM, CHAIS was invited to speak about Responsible Pet Ownership which encompassed welfare concerns and positive reinforcement dog training. He was also one of the judges of the show, who watched to see animal handlers who have ensured good training and welfare in different categories like grooming, training etc. Hence, he presented the award to the best animal handler. We would share more details on this amazing session. 📍 #animalwelfare #NVMA #responsiblepetownership #positivereinforcementtraining

Two weeks ago, it was a great time for sharing as Dr. Sunday Agbonika DVM, CHAIS had the pleasure of being invited to the Effective Altruism Nigeria Summit. Presenting what we do at Dogalov as the Founder, on the topic, Cage Free Africa, especially on the problems and ways to improve. He also shared perspectives on Animal Welfare and how it translates to better human well-being, from sentience, which is the capacity to have subjective experiences with positive or negative valence to how the 5 freedoms play a role in ensuring Good Animal Welfare. A snippet, are you aware that animals are slaughtered humanely, and their meats taste better than those treated inhumanely? Yes! Generally, animal cruelty should not be welcomed in our spaces. You can make a great impact driven by evidence and reason as we do. We also had one of our team members, Dr. Praise Akobo join the summit as a participant. Let's embrace animal welfare as a collective and collaborative effort. #animalwelfare #humanwellbeing #dogalov Enriching Human Lives in Africa through Pets!

Vet Surgeon| Pioneering Human Animal Interactions (HAI) in Nigeria/Africa | Animal Behaviour/ Welfare | Convener, Africa's Annual Conference on HAI | Founder: Dogalov HumAn Support Initiative
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak to student members of the Nigerian Association of Psychology Students (NAPS), led by Purejoy Ogunbiyi , during their 8th annual national conference which held virtually. One of the outcomes of deliberately reaching out to executives or members of the multidisciplinary, professional, stakeholder associations related to Human-Animal Interactions (HAI) while preparing for the 2024 edition of our annual, HAI Conference in Africa, was receiving invitations to come speak about HAI at some of the stakeholder associations, beginning with the NAPS conference. I was so inspired by their immediate action on a topic they were hearing about for the first time, with an overwhelming interest in signing up for our ongoing volunteer recruitment drive. After my presentation, one of the students asked how we had been able to get Nigerians to make the shift from viewing animals with little or no regard, to viewing them as agents of care. In response, I shared some of our success stories in getting families of children with special needs (our focus group), to adopt and care for animal species they normally wouldn't, seeing the positive influence on their child. These experiences have led us to believing that one of the best ways to get people in the developing countries, where animal welfare is not so much regarded, is using the WIIFM (what's in it for me) approach, showing them how animal care and welfare can positively impact their lives, economies (especially, livestock farmers) and outcomes. Do you agree? What other ways would you recommend to get people from the developing countries to buy-in into optimal #animalwelfare ? #Psychology #students
