Please join us at this Pre-Conference event where Community Based Organisations (CBOs) Coalition Malawi will be one of the Panelist. The Pre-Conference, titled "Shifting Power and Advancing Equity in African Population Research and Collaborations," aims to examine the power dynamics that exist in demographic research collaborations in the African context and explore strategies to foster more equitable and inclusive practices. Bridging the gap between research findings and practical implementation remains a challenge. There is a need to involve communities in research design, implementation, and evaluation. This can ensure relevance and responsiveness to local needs. Researchers, policymakers, communities and practitioners must collaborate effectively to translate research into real-world impact. By fostering collaboration, transparency, and equitable access, we can enhance the relationship between research and societal well-being. Community-based organisations can play a crucial role in shaping national research agendas and promoting the wellbeing of populations. CBOs/CSOs involvement in setting research agendas can ensure that research priorities align with societal needs, promote transparency, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of populations. CBOs/CSOs can contribute by providing insights, advocating for specific research priorities, and ensuring that societal needs are considered.

The thing about privilege is that it is often invisible to those who have it. Having privilege doesn't mean you are born rich or that you haven't had to work hard, it just means there are certain things in life that you don't have to think about. When we reveal these hidden privileges, we start to understand how the gaps that exist, in the economic, educational and health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, are formed. I was in Rio de Janeiro this week, together with my colleague Luciana Phebo from UNICEF’s Brazil Country Office. In this beautiful city, the Brazilian Government and specifically the Ministry of Health did a stellar job at convening the G20 Ministers of Health for two days of high-level discussions, and a specific joint session with Ministers of Finance. All this under the G20’s umbrella topic of “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”. The ministers discussed a series of important issues like the linkages between human, animal, plant and environmental health (“One Health”), the linkages between climate change, health and equity, and also anti-microbial resistance, digital health, and the health workforce. The Ministers of Health approved two declarations which call on G20 members to undertake specific actions to improve the health of their populations in a multisectoral way, including through improving the preparedness and response to pandemics and addressing climate change and health, and improving the social determinants of health. Now the proof of the pudding is in the eating. These declarations need to be translated into concrete actions. In order to achieve their intended impact, the actions will need to include a strong focus on children.
