Presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, the study analyzed genetic data from tumours and found that a high-fat, low-fibre diet might increase gut inflammation, preventing natural tumour suppression. Additionally, cells in young colorectal cancer patients appeared to age 15 years faster than their actual age, a phenomenon not seen in older patients. The American Cancer Society reported a concerning rise in colorectal cancer among people under 55, with cases doubling from 1 in 10 in 1995 to 1 in 5 in 2019. Diet plays a significant role, with a 2017 analysis showing a 12% increased risk of colorectal cancer from daily consumption of 3.5 ounces of red or processed meat. However, the relationship between excess weight and cancer is multifaceted. Research links higher BMI, particularly in obese individuals, to increased risks for multiple cancers, including colorectal, postmenopausal breast, and endometrial cancers. Chronic inflammation and hormonal changes driven by excess body fat are significant factors. Despite these associations, gaps remain in understanding how weight loss impacts cancer risk. Studies on weight loss through bariatric surgery show promising results, yet data on less dramatic weight loss are inconclusive. The rising incidence of obesity-related cancers, especially among younger and minority populations, underscores the need for continued research and tailored public health strategies. It can occur at any age, but is most commonly diagnosed in women over 50 (2). Ovarian cancer affects thousands of women worldwide, yet awareness and early detection can save lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer in women, with over 300,000 new cases diagnosed annually (1). 2.      About Ovarian Cancer Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include vaginal bleeding, abdominal bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and more frequent urination (3). Factors that may increase the risk of ovarian cancer include middle or old age, family history of ovarian or breast cancer, past medical history of  breast, uterine, or colorectal cancer, endometriosis, nulliparity, certain genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, and obesity (4). Ovarian cancer can spread to other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, pelvis, and lungs (5). 3.      Conclusion and Call to Action There is no known way to prevent ovarian cancer, but some things are associated with a lower chance of getting it. 🌟 Celebrating Impact and Growth: Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative's 2023/2024 Impact Report 🌟 We are thrilled to share the incredible impact of Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative over the past year. Through our unwavering dedication to cancer support, advocacy, and resource development, we have made significant strides in the fight against cancer. Advocacy: Our advocacy efforts have touched the lives of many. We reached 2 schools and 2000 students, educating and raising awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. Additionally, we published 10 articles on our website, amplifying our voice and spreading vital information far and wide. Vaccination: Vaccination is a crucial tool in cancer prevention. We are proud to announce that 100 girls and women have been vaccinated against HPV, helping to protect them from this cancer-causing virus. Resources: Knowledge is power. To empower the society, we published 1 pamphlet, providing valuable information to better understand the disease cancer. Capacity Building: None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers. We are excited to welcome 10 new volunteers to our team, each bringing their unique skills and passion to further our cause. As we reflect on these achievements, we are grateful for the support of our community, partners, and volunteers. Together, we will continue to make a difference in the fight against cancer. In September, a month dedicated globally to Childhood Cancer Awareness, we embarked on a mission that went beyond mere advocacy. Recognizing the urgent need to illuminate the shadows cast by childhood cancer, our team launched a comprehensive awareness program targeted at secondary schools. Our goal? To weave a fabric of awareness that stretches across communities, nurturing a more informed society. In addition to that, we designed pamphlets to be shared to schools and students. This was done to create a ripple effect of awareness in the society. We stepped into schools with a message of hope and empowerment. These pamphlets were not just pieces of paper but beacons of knowledge, designed to educate students on the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with childhood cancer. But our vision was broader – we sought to ignite conversations, encourage preventive actions, and foster a supportive environment for affected families. The ripple effect of this initiative has been profound. Students became ambassadors of change, carrying the message back to their homes and communities, thereby amplifying our efforts to combat the misconceptions surrounding childhood cancer. We are deeply moved by the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the students and educators alike, who joined us in spreading awareness far and wide. This journey reaffirmed our belief in the power of collective action and education in battling childhood cancer. It is a testament to how informed communities can create an environment where empathy and support flourish, making a significant difference in the lives of those touched by this disease. Prevention is Key: Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative's HPV Vaccination Program Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative is proud to announce the success of our recent HPV Awareness and Vaccination Program in Azikoro, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. In this local community, we raised awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, and vaccination against HPV, the primary cause of cervical cancer, is a crucial step in its prevention. During our outreach, we were able to vaccinate about 100 girls and women, providing them with protection against this deadly virus. At Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative, we believe that prevention is better and cheaper than cure. By vaccinating girls and women against HPV, we are not only protecting their health but also contributing to the global effort to eradicate cervical cancer. We are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these individuals and their families. Together, we can educate, empower, and eradicate cancer. 🌟 Inspiring the Next Generation: Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative's Secondary School Awareness Program We are thrilled to share the impact of our recent Secondary School Awareness Program, where Stellaris Cancer Support Initiative visited Government Science Technical School, Okaka, Yenagoa, and Community Secondary School, Kpansia, Yenagoa, in Bayelsa State. Our goal was to raise awareness about cancer, particularly childhood cancer, among students, ensuring a cancer-aware society in the future. Through these visits, we reached approximately 2000 students, engaging them in discussions about cancer, its causes, and prevention. We are delighted to see that our efforts have resonated well with the students, who not only participated actively but also asked insightful questions, demonstrating their understanding and concern about this important health issue. As an organization driven by the belief that education is key to empowerment and eradication, we are encouraged by the impact of our program on the young minds we interacted with. By equipping them with knowledge and awareness about cancer, we are planting the seeds for a future where cancer is better understood, prevented, and ultimately defeated.
