Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action: Advancing HPV Elimination in the Region On the occasion of Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action, we at EM-NCDA, through our HPV MENA Coalition, are driving efforts to eliminate HPV-related cancers in the region. Meet Andrew and Brittany. Andrew was diagnosed with HPV-related throat cancer in 2019 after noticing a lump on his neck. He has since developed a rare airways disease due to radiation for #headandneckcancer and can no longer eat orally, only liquid through his PEG tube. Brittany, Andrew’s daughter, is an ambassador for #HANCA and the pair is keen to start a conversation around #HPV and #HNC, ensuring all Australians are aware that HPV does not only cause cervical cancer, it causes 70% of Tonsil and Base of Tongue Cancers. With a vaccine now available for all Australian high school children, there is hope that other families will not have to go through what Andrew and Brittany’s family has. This week is Cervical Screening Awareness Week! Cervical cancer is the 14th most common cancer in females in the UK, with 2 incredibly effective methods of prevention: HPV Vaccination and Cervical Screening. This week I urge women and those with a cervix to engage in material shared by the NHS, Macmillan Cancer Support, Cancer Research UK (CRUK), and your local health and community centres. Cervical Screening Awareness Week encourages those at risk of developing cervical cancer to take the time to find out more about why screening exists, how the process works, and what the risks are if you don’t attend your regular screens. The aim is not to enforce or scare people with statistics and quotes, but rather inform using real-life experiences. Information shared by charities and health boards is there to tell readers of the ease of the process, and things you can do before, during and after your screening that can improve your comfort, decrease anxiety or worry and ultimately improve the overall experience. Macmillan cancer support has an FAQ page on their website dedicated to cervical screening, as well as an online community where you can ask your own question and converse with those with similar experiences or worries. This is available all year round, but is highlighted during this important week. The amount of pushbacks due to myths, misconceptions, and misinformation we encountered during our first project, End Cervical Cancer, with sponsorship from the Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation (ACT Foundation), was absolutely eye-opening. Those pushbacks birth our second project, still sponsored by ACT Foundation - End HPV Vaccine Hesitancy project. The idea is to debunk misconceptions, bust myths, and change the story around HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening. 💉 Cervical cancer is a vaccine preventable disease. 💉 The vaccine does not cause infertility or death. 💉 The vaccine does not make young girls promiscuous. Today, on World Cancer Day, let's shift our focus to some positive news, especially regarding Cervical cancer. While it stands as the 4th most deadly cancer in women, with a woman losing her life every 90 seconds, and a staggering 90% of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries, there's a beacon of hope. More than 90% of HPV (cervical cancer) cases are preventable by the vaccine. Since last year, the FGN has committed to vaccinating 7.7 million girls against HPV and enhancing access to screening for over 70% of women at age 35 and again at 45. For me, gender-neutral HPV vaccination is personal. Growing up in Nigeria, I’ve seen how preventable cancers have taken a toll on families. We’ve long thought HPV is just a women’s issue, but that’s not true. Men are affected too, and knowing that something as simple as a vaccine could change lives makes this an urgent priority. When I heard about the global push for equal access to this vaccine, it struck me deeply.
