In February, we took a significant step towards addressing climate change and its impact on Nigeria’s Northwest region. This happened at the Northwest Commissioners Summit on Climate Change, which was organised by Surge Africa Organisation and hosted by the Kano State Ministry of Environment. The regional leaders pledged to the Kano Declaration on Climate and Environment. This seven-point declaration addresses the urgent need to tackle climate change and aims to foster a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future for the Northwest region. The declaration will be translated into practical climate resilience and adaptation solutions at the regional, state, and community levels. Climate Narratives LAB: Culture, Data, Community, Solutions, Action, in Santos! The Climate Narratives LAB in Santos was an impactful and profound experience that highlighted the strength of cultural and environmental heritage in tackling climate challenges in the Baxiada Santista Territory, Brazil, and Africa. For the first two days, more than 20 speakers from Brazil and Nigeria explored the importance of cultural heritage, sustainability, and indigenous knowledge in tackling climate change. Discussions moved around the significant challenges posed by capitalism and climate change, community engagement, strategic communications for mobilisation and data-driven methods for sharing environmental issues and arriving at solutions. In the last two days, we transitioned to the prototyping Lab where we brought together selected people and ideas, debated those ideas and experimented solutions, prioritising human well-being and climate justice for effective climate solutions in Santos. We concluded the Climate Narratives LAB with a renewed sense of unity and purpose in addressing climate change challenges, while showcasing the power of cultural heritage, community and cross-border innovative ideas in driving meaningful climate action in the Global South. #ClimateNarrativesLab #SurgeXMedia #SurgeAfricaOrg #ClimateSolutions #LabProcomum

  • We are excited to announce the upcoming Climate Narratives Lab! In partnership with @Procomum, we will host this impactful event from June 19 to June 22, 2024, in Santos, Brazil. The Climate Narratives Lab aims to convene a diverse group of activists, researchers, storytellers, and indigenous defenders. Our goal is to delve into the power of strategic communications and public engagement as tools for driving accountability in environmental justice across Latin America and Africa. This event is particularly timely, as the need for partnership and collaboration among global southern allies has never been more critical. By coming together, we aim to shape a global agenda that not only acknowledges but actively addresses the unique struggles faced by indigenous communities in their fight for environmental justice. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of workshops, discussions, and collaborative projects designed to foster innovative approaches to environmental advocacy. The lab will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge, building networks, and developing strategies that amplify the voices of those on the frontlines of the environmental justice movement. We believe that by strengthening these connections, we can create a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
