The journey to transforming Africa's education systems must begin with reliable, locally generated data. Foundational learning is the bedrock of educational success, and without a robust system to measure and address learning outcomes, millions of children across the continent risk being left behind. Locally driven, citizen-led assessments like LEARNigeria exemplify the power of data-informed solutions in addressing educational challenges head-on. This vision was powerfully echoed at the Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (Africa FLEX 2024) in Kigali, Rwanda. Ruth Kagia, High-Level Envoy and Advisor for Education under Global Partnership for Education (GPE), delivered an inspiring endorsement of citizen-led assessments, citing LEARNigeria’s impact as a flagship initiative in this space. In her remarks, Kagia posed a profound question that underscores the essence of our work: “Are our children learning?” Her recognition validates the pivotal role of local research in shaping data-driven strategies for foundational learning. As Nigeria’s pioneer in citizen-led household assessments, TEP Centre is committed to leading this charge through LEARNigeria’s second iteration in partnership with the National Bureau of Statistics and other key stakeholders. Africa FLEX 2024 served as a platform for advancing this agenda, pushing critical conversations on scaling local solutions to foundational learning deficits. Together, we are reimagining education systems across the continent through the power of data and local action. Watch Ruth Kagia’s impactful remarks here and join us in amplifying the role of locally driven, data-informed approaches to ensuring every child learns. #FoundationalLearning #LEARNigeria #AfricaFLEX2024 #EducationForAll #TEPCentre #DataInformedSolutions
