The Visiola Foundation Receives Google RISE Award We’re thrilled to announce that The Visiola Foundation is one of 30 organizations in 18 countries receiving a 2016 Google RISE Award! The Google RISE Awards is a program for informal education organizations around the world that promote computer science (CS) for K-12/pre-university age youth that are traditionally underrepresented in CS. About us
The Visiola Foundation is a 2016 Google RISE Award recipient and has been funded by Cargill Corporation (UK), Schneider Electric, and ACT Foundation. It previously received in-kind support as a partner organization of Intel Semiconductor West Africa and Young Engineers. The Foundation was invited as a Goalkeeper by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to its annual summit in New York in 2018, and has also been recognized by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an organization that is helping to drive the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Other partners include Cellulant, Quantum Technology, and Cinoteck. The Visiola Foundation also partners with the Abuja FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB) to educate, train, and mentor girls and young women from underserved and disadvantaged backgrounds in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and trains them in Robotics, Electronics, Mechanics, Computer Programming, and Mobile App Development to design and launch viable tech-enabled enterprises. Graduates of its programs have become tech-enabled entrepreneurs, have accessed high-wage jobs, have gained admission to global universities to pursue STEM degrees, and have been recognized nationally and internationally in STEM competitions such as the Technovation Challenge, World Science Scholars, and UNESCO's Youth-led Energy Futures, among others. The Foundation was launched in 2014 and runs programs in Ghana and Nigeria in West Africa. It has a Board of seasoned and respected professionals who provide strategic direction and fiduciary oversight.

Last week, our Instruction Manager, Serena Samuel and Cybersecurity Lead, Ayomide Omigbodun accompanied Fatima (17), a student in our After-School STEM Clubs for Girls program and a 2023 World Science Scholar to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the "Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in Africa" Continental Conference organized by UNESCO and African Union. The conference comprised a STEM Experience Hub, a dynamic space where educators, students, entrepreneurs and policymakers could deepen their understanding of cutting-edge STEM concepts, develop practical skills, and build partnerships, as well as high-level plenaries aiming to catalyze and share transformative action on STEM and four parallel thematic tracks: 1. Strengthening the Foundations of STEM Education 2. Advancing Gender Equality and Inclusion in and through STEM 3. Fostering STEM Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Excellence 4. Promoting STEM Financing, Diplomacy and Partnerships The Visiola Foundation's 360-Degree Developmental Learning Model includes the important pillars of experiential learning (hands-on activities), and exposure to industry to enable students to visualize an advanced future. It was an eye opening experience for Fatima, a student from Katsina in northern Nigeria who has never traveled outside her country and who grew up in a very sheltered community with minimal opportunities, where girls' education is de-prioritized. We are grateful to the African Union, UNESCO, and our partners for enabling us to normalize access to STEM education and experiential learning opportunities for girls like Fatima who come from underserved communities.
