NOW ONLINE: The 2024 Access to Medicine Index #ATMI24 provides an in-depth analysis of what the #pharma industry is doing to bridge the gap in #EquitableAccess. Despite incredible progress in #GlobalHealth, half of the global population still struggles to access the medicines and #healthcare they desperately need. The 2024 Access to Medicine Index shows an overall stagnation in pharmaceutical companies’ efforts to improve access to essential healthcare products across low- and middle-income countries #LMICs. While some modest progress has been made, the potential for improving access is still far from realised and the pace of change is slow. Watch Jayasree Iyer, the Foundation's CEO, as she shares the key findings from this ninth iteration of the Index and discusses how the industry has performed over the past two years. Moving pharmaceutical companies to expand access to their products in low- & middle-income countries
Over ons
The Access to Medicine Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. We seek to transform the healthcare ecosystem by motivating and mobilising companies to expand access to their essential healthcare products in low- and middle-income countries. Over the past two decades, we have demonstrated the power of data, collaboration and persuasion to trigger action by the pharmaceutical industry and scale up access to products. Our tried-and-tested approach involves defining the actions that healthcare companies should take, analysing what companies are actually doing, and promoting best practices. To turn our insights into action, we engage with the companies we evaluate, as well as with stakeholders across the private and public sectors. Our power to make an impact has been proven in the case of Big Pharma, as demonstrated by the success of the Access to Medicine Index. We have now begun to further expand our scope and use our change-making model to move companies across a wider range of healthcare sectors. This encompasses core groups of companies across five sectors: Big Pharma, vaccine manufacturers, generic medicine manufacturers, diagnostic companies and medical gas companies. In an article for The Guardian, Julia Kollewe covers the publication of the 2024 #AccesstoMedicine Index #ATMI24, spotlighting the challenges that stem from the #pharma industry's limited focus on addressing critical #healthcare needs in low- and middle-income countries #LMICs. She highlights the finding that only 43% of #ClinicalTrials take place in LMICs covered by the report, despite being home to 80% of the global population. Since companies typically focus their access planning in countries where they conduct trials, this leaves many patients in need behind. Kollewe quotes the Foundation's CEO, Jayasree Iyer: "Companies have very clearly said we will register and prioritise registration in countries where the trials are running, but if they don’t run the trials in more areas… then you’re never going to solve this health equity problem for all the innovative new products." 80% of the total global disease burden of neglected tropical diseases #NTDs is faced by just 15 low- and middle-income countries #LMICs, contributing to an estimated 14.5 million disability-adjusted life years. Through long-term donation programmes, #pharma companies can provide access to NTD treatments for people who are unable to or have limited resources to pay for it. The 2024 #AccesstoMedicine Index #ATMI24 has identified five additional donation programmes targeting NTDs, bringing the total number to 19. What do these programmes look like? Has the #pharma industry advanced in achieving global #HealthEquity? The 2024 Access to Medicine Index #ATMI24 finds that while some modest progress has been made, the potential for improving access is still far from realised. The pace of change needs to be vastly accelerated to meet the growing unmet healthcare needs in low- and middle-income countries #LMICs. #EquitableAccess to medicines is more urgent than ever. Innovative treatments can improve #GlobalHealth – but only if they are accessible to all. Speaking about the #AccesstoMedicine Index as a changemaking tool, Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, CEO at MEDICAID CANCER FOUNDATION and President-Elect of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) notes: "The Index that the Foundation works on is sort of a competition. It creates an environment whereby you want to do better and you want to do more. It’s a driver for #HealthEquity, it’s a driver for positive change in the therapeutic landscape and it’s a driver to save lives – bottom line." In her latest op-ed for the World Economic Forum, our CEO, Jayasree Iyer, writes about how #EquitableAccess to medicines isn't just a moral imperative but a strategic opportunity for sustainable returns. The 2024 #AccesstoMedicine Index #ATMI24 highlights how prioritising affordable and locally available medicines in low- and middle-income countries #LMICs can unlock new markets and drive innovation. With 80% of the global population living in LMICs, the demand for essential treatments, ranging from infectious diseases to non-communicable conditions like cancer and diabetes, is higher than ever. How can #pharma companies and #investors help transform #healthcare in underserved regions while driving sustainable growth? Non-communicable diseases #NCDs are the number one cause of death and disability worldwide, with three-quarters of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries #LMICs. Through voluntary licensing, #pharma companies can improve access to vital NCD treatments in LMICs. The 2024 #AccesstoMedicine Index #ATMI24 finds that voluntary licensing continues to be a severely underutilised mechanism in NCDs. 26 of 27 licences analysed cover communicable diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis B and C. By engaging in more licensing agreements for NCDs, companies could facilitate access to innovative medicines that can improve quality of life and save lives globally.
