Insights from COP 29: Toward Sustainable Living Communities 💡 🌍 At COP 29 in Baku, we had the privilege of presenting INCLUDE’s key messages on Africa’s low-carbon transition during the side event "Towards Sustainable Living Communities." This session brought to life the mantra: Think globally, act locally. The discussion underscored a vital truth—our climate challenges are global, but solutions must be locally rooted. Communities must lead in shaping policies that reflect their unique needs, aspirations, and lived experiences. Here are three key takeaways from our presentation: 1️⃣ Diverse Stakeholder Perspectives are Necessary in Africa's Low-Carbon Transition 2️⃣ The Need for Balanced and Inclusive Policies 3️⃣ Recommendations for a Just and Inclusive Transition Find the detailed takeaways in the slide below. Congrats to Rachel Dubale, alumna of the Research Master African Studies at Leiden University, who received the Africa Thesis Award 2023 yesterday! Her thesis focuses on the population of urban slums in Addis Ababa who were relocated to newly built condominium units; what impact does such a relocation have on the inhabitants? The thesis stood out for its societal relevance, jury member Mandipa Ndlovu said. Universiteit en Samenleving: Afrika. Het 24e voorbeeld van de relatie tussen de Universiteit en de samenleving. Universiteit Leiden African Studies Centre Leiden Wie Westerse media volgt, denkt al snel aan 'Afrika' als het herkomstoord van wanhopige migranten, continent van honger en ziektes, broedplaats voor internationaal terrorisme. Wie een breder beeld wil hebben, kan terecht bij de Leidse Afrikanisten. Juist door hun nauwe banden met Afrikaanse partners en hun nadruk op fundamenteel onderzoek zijn ze er de afgelopen decennia in geslaagd inzichten te generen die zowel Westerse als Afrikaanse samenlevingen ten goede komen. Met een bevolking die de komende eeuw waarschijnlijk doorgroeit tot 4 miljard, een uitdijende economische middenklasse en de opkomst van 21e-eeuwse Afrikaanse multinationals staan Afrikaanse landen en hun internationale partners voor nieuwe uitdagingen: hoe voorzie je exploderende steden van basisvoorzieningen, hoe leid je migratiestromen in acceptabele banen en hoe doorbreek je oude machtsverhoudingen? Waar dit traditioneel vragen voor nationale overheden en NGO's waren, treffen ze tegenwoordig ook multinationals en internationale instituten. Met de toenemende globalisering heeft de realiteit in Afrika direct effect op die in het Westen, en vice versa. Afrikaanse worminfecties blijken remedies te bieden voor 'Europese' welvaartsziektes, verschuivingen in de wereldeconomie leiden tot nieuwe handelsrelaties en het internet maakt dorpsbewoners tot wereldburgers.
