What does the widespread use of non-European cloud services mean for our digital autonomy? To enhance the quality of the debate on this question, De Argumentenfabriek developed the Argument Map Non-European Cloud Services on behalf of AMS-IX and ECP Platform voor de InformatieSamenleving (Platform ECP). Marjolijn Bonthuis-Krijger of Platform ECP and Peter van Burgel of AMS-IX presented it today to members of Parliament, Commission of Digital Affairs. The Argument Map provides an overview of all pro and con arguments about the use of non-European cloud services. The largest non-European cloud services offer unprecedented opportunities for data storage and computing power. As a result, essential Dutch business and government services are increasingly running on non-European cloud services. The use of cloud services has thus grown from an ICT issue to an important social issue. Members of Parliament can use the map in preparation for the Round Table Discussion on Digital Sovereignty that will take place Feb. 13. Other organisations, companies and governments can also apply the overview in considering the use of cloud services. The Argument Map Non-European Cloud Services can be found and downloaded at https://ow.ly/6BFV50UTuZj Contributing to the Argument Map were experts from the organisations Amazon Web Services (AWS), ARTICLE 19, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (Dutch DPA), Bert Hubert (in a personal capacity), Bit, CIO Platform Nederland, Centre of Excellence for Data Sharing & Cloud, Dutch Cloud Community, Espresso gridpoint bv, Freedom Internet, i3D.net, The Clingendael Institute, Intermax, KPN, Leaseweb, Microsoft, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties, Ministry of Economic Affairs, NEBUL | European Private AI, NLdigital, SIDN, SURF, TNO and VNG. Each organisation has its own perspective on the arguments on the map, which means they do not have to agree with all the arguments and will also weigh the arguments differently. What consideration would you make based on this Argument Map?
