Nesciobrug is a busy cycle bridge to the neighborhood of IJburg. And becoming busier as IJburg is growing. The intersection of cycle paths at the northeastern end of Nesciobrug is complicated: More and more cyclists that can be riding fast, esp those coming from the bridge. To make the intersection safer, and fit for growing numbers of cyclists, a new lay-out is being built. With more space, islands in the middle and cleare priority. The work itself is complicated as well. Nesciobrug is a busy route without a viable alternative. By-passes are made so that cyclists and pedestrians can continue their route. Towards the end of the work the intersection needs to be closed entirely on one day, to make the connection to Nesciobrug itself. But not during morning rush hour, as that would cause serious bike overcrowding on Amsterdambrug, the bridge in the alternative route. Main road Linnaeusstraat - Middenweg in Amsterdam's city district Stadsdeel Oost will be renovated. In the new lay-out there will be more space for cyclists and pedestrians, cycle lanes instead of segregated bicycle paths, cars and trams will use the same lane, and more space for parking bicycles. More about the design and and the choices made in the booklet that can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e2arQKNd The definitive design was approved last November. Actual road work will start this year. Vrouwenzandstraat in Gemeente Purmerend has been turned into a bicycle street where cars are guests. With red asphalt, few cars and max 30km/h the street is now safer and more pleasant to ride for cyclists, esp. the many children and youngster cycling to school via this route. Aldermen Pascal Verkroost and Coen Lageveen opened the bicycle street by removing the last construction fences and residents took the new bicycle street into use. As the opening was on the Dutch festive day of Sinterklaas, December 5th, bicycle Piets joined the opening with hot chocolate and gingerbread. They also handed out bicycle lights, so that cyclists in Wheermolen can take to the road well-lit during these dark days. https://lnkd.in/eJCjvhXC Location: 52.51056375433587, 4.9780428351651596 Sophie Konings, Lútsen de Jong, Frans Hasselaar, Vervoerregio Amsterdam, Frank .Bijvoet, Markus BV, Paula de Groot, Ewald Schoorl, Jan Willem Visser

Last year, some 70,000 bicycles that were parked incorrectly or for too long ended up in Amsterdam’s Fietsdepot, the municipal bicycle depot. Our latest article is about the depot and how it works with incorrectly parked bicycles and left behind bicycles. https://lnkd.in/e4zh93-j

Can Adapted Speed Governance (ASG) help make cities safer? That's what the Townmaking Institute is investigating in collaboration with Gemeente Amsterdam. Let’s talk about speed: Safer vehicles or safer streets? That's what the talk will about in Pakhuis de Zwijger on Wed 18 Dec, 20.00 Vehicle speeds profoundly effects our experience of cities. What feels too fast or too slow often depends on the place we occupy in traffic: a pedestrian may feel endangered by a motorist’s speed, while the motorist simply wants to reach their destination. Traditionally, fixed speed limits have been the solution, but these don’t account for the dynamic nature of urban spaces, nor the emergence of new vehicle types. Unsafe streets push people into safer vehicles, but in doing so, we risk neglecting making safer streets. To create safer, more livable streets, we need to rethink our approach to speed regulation, considering the evolving complexity of urban life. This event marks the start of our journey towards the Speed Summit in 2025. The conversation opens with Carl Honoré, Luca Bertolini, and Onno Kramer exploring what should come first for liveable cities: safe streets or safe vehicles. https://lnkd.in/e44PQ6Xe The project about speed is a collaboration of Gemeente Amsterdam and Townmaking Institute, Servaz van Berkum moderates the evening, Paul Timmer, Pepijn Verpaalen, Anne H., Sophie Konings, karin broer, Lútsen de Jong, Marjolein de Lange, Reinder Rustema
