Ecosystems provide a multitude of different benefits, such as improving water quality (and safety), supporting biodiversity, recreation, or growing local foods. But understanding which land use practices benefit society the most is difficult. Athena’s Bep Schrammeijer, PhD and MG van der Meij recently helped to organise the VeenVitaal project's fourth consortium meeting with the aim to integrate policy, scientific, and practical knowledge towards developing simple and reliable indicators of #peatmeadow 'values’. Some highlights from the meeting: 🪶 Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) researchers Lianne Woudstra, Sanne Bethe, and Roeland Bom from BirdLife International updated the consortium on their findings from the past year. The topics included biodiversity and the ecosystem processes of nature-inclusive ditch-edges, and the preferred breeding grounds of black-tailed godwits. 🌿 Dr. Marcelle Lock and Mart Verwijmeren from the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment shared their conceptions about how to assess the value of the different uses of peat meadows. They then collected the current state of knowledge from consortium partners about several land use interventions and how these influence the benefits provided by peat meadows. 🔎 Perceptions of the current state of the peat meadows were strongly influenced by the various types of knowledge that were being shared. 🛞 The work processes of consortium members, such as researchers, policymakers, and farmers, are very different, and aligning knowledge and data from these diverse fields is an important challenge. A next step of this project will incorporate archival footage and user voices into the peat meadow narrative, so stay tuned for #citizenscience initiatives! #EcosystemServices

Thank you to everyone who participated in our session on nature based therapies last Friday at the 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Nagasaki, Japan! Nicole Heise Vigil (Ficus Perú Desarrollo Socioambiental) and I (Athena - Research and Education Institute) presented on the latest evidence on the relationship between nature exposure and health, and recent empirical findings from the NATURELAB EU Project about the perceived barriers and facilitators for the integration of nature based therapies in healthcare systems and beyond. Attendees experienced a guided nature based activity and debated whether nature based therapies will strengthen both ecosystems and health systems and thereby positively affect human and environmental health. Also many thanks to Health Systems Global and to our consortium partners, especially GroenPlatvorm Zuid-Oost, Forest Therapy Hub, SPI, and KMOP. #HSR2024 #HealthForAll #PlanetaryHealth #NATURELAB #NatureTherapy #SustainableHealthSystems #HealthGovernance #ResearchAndInnovation #HorizonEurope #ResilientHealthSystems #GlobalHealth

People with #ADHD often experience stigma which impacts their school, work, care and social life. To improve efforts to reduce stigma, Athena's Marlies Visser and Ruth Peters along with Marjolein Luman gathered the perspectives of young adults with ADHD as well as those of parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals. In a recent #openaccess publication, they found, among other things, that collaboration with #expertsbyexperience is necessary to address to the specific needs of people with ADHD. For more on their findings, access the article "Unmet Needs of Children and Young Adults With ADHD: Insights From Key Stakeholders on Priorities for Stigma Reduction" at https://lnkd.in/eEeFjdks #stigma #neurodiversity

As part of the CropMix project, Athena's Anne Loeber, Kristiaan Kok, Bep Schrammeijer, PhD and Camilla Bodewes are working towards designing transition pathways for #sustainable and ecology-based #agriculture. This week, they hosted the yearly consortium meeting at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). At the meeting, farmers, researchers, nature organisations, and government representatives came together to discuss the perspectives of the various partners in the food chain 🥕, engage with questions about the role of the consumer in food system transitions 🛒, and share progress on the diverse #LivingLab activities occurring within the project 📢, as well as other important topics. We look forward to the next gathering! #sustainabilitytransition #foodsystems
// Yesterday, our consortium was a guest of the Athena - Research and Education Institute at the VU University of Amsterdam. Some highlights of the day. - Kristiaan Kok and Niels Anten opened the day around the theme ‘cooperation and competition’. Who is in charge in our #food #system? What forms of #power actually exist? Who has influence, directly or indirectly, and who do you work with to change the system? And what can we learn from non-humans who also engage in agriculture, such as ants that grow fungi to benefit themselves? - PhD candidates Rik Waenink, Chiara Boeri, Lisa Marijke van den Berg, Franklin Harris and Thijmen van Loon presented their first results. - We had a panel discussion, led by Anne Loeber, on the experiences from four living labs with Maria Van Boxtel (Land & Co), Carla Overgaauw (RVO), Helma Verberkt (Artemis) and Marius Monen (Avans University of Applied Sciences). This showed that nice results have already emerged from the living labs. - PhD candidate Camilla Bodewes provided a workshop on the question ‘Who is the consumer?’ (The pheasant and the hare, according to one of the farmers. 😉) What drives them and do they have a responsibility in the #foodtransition? Thank you to all of the attendees and special thanks to the team at Athena for organising this event! Want to know more? Read the report through the link in the comments.

We are excited to share the “Flavors of Resistance,” booklet. A multimedia compilation of emotional care recipes from workshops on collectivizing mental health care with trans human rights defenders in Colombia [in Spanish]. We hope it inspires your participatory action research (#PAR). #ParticipatoryActionResearch #Transdisciplinarity
🏳️⚧️ Excited to share our latest publication: "Flavors of Resistance: Emotional Care Recipes between Trans Activisms" (In Spanish) This booklet results from our workshops on collectivizing mental health care with trans human rights defenders in Colombia, in collaboration with the Liga de Salud Trans and the Athena - Research and Education Institute. Together, we explored barriers and strengths, learn from each others tools, and co-created care strategies tailored to the diverse experiences of trans activists in different regions of the country. Throughout these workshops, we learned that care isn’t one-size-fits-all; each context calls for unique approaches. Inspired by this, we created this booklet as a “cookbook” where trans leaders contributed their own “recipe” for emotional well-being. We embraced a multimedia approach to capture each leader’s preferred way of expression: some recipes are written, others are sung, drawn, or even danced. Each recipe is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community-based care. 🗣️ While it is currently only available in Spanish, we hope the format of this booklet inspires others to reimagine what collective, participatory spaces can look like, and how academia and grassroots movements can join efforts.
