The Circularity Gap Report Textiles: Your Questions Answered! Our recent Circularity Gap Report Textiles sparked meaningful discussions and insightful questions, particularly during our in-depth webinar. To keep the momentum going, we’re addressing some of the most frequently asked questions here: ❓Why is the Circularity Metric only 0.3%? 💡The textile industry relies almost entirely on virgin materials, with only a very small share of secondary materials being used across the value chain. The Circularity Metric is calculated using this equation: Circularity Metric (CM) = Secondary Inputs (SI) / Total Raw Material Consumption (RMC) CM = 9.6 Mt / 3251 Mt  CM = 0.3% ❓CGR Textiles lists four circular strategies (narrow, slow, regenerate, and cycle flows). Is the Circularity Metric only measuring ‘cycle flows’? 💡The Circularity Metric measures the share of materials that come from secondary sources compared to virgin sources. The Metric is most influenced by the following strategies: Narrow strategies: Using fewer resources by (producing products more efficiently. Slow strategies: Extending product life to slow the overall flow of resources.  Cycle strategies: Increasing the use of secondary materials throughout the value chain ❓How can the textile industry adopt the Circularity Metric to track progress? 💡The textile industry should periodically measure the Circularity Metric ( every two to five years) while tracking trends across circular strategies to identify successes and challenges. • Did you know that 7.6% of all jobs in Montréal are related to the circular economy? Even better, 90% of jobs in Montréal's Utilities sector are circular. This impressive figure is driven by the city's active use of renewable energy, which also spurs circular job creation. This is just one insight from our newly released Data Explorer on Circular Jobs in  Montréal. To reach its ambitious goal of achieving a 17% circular economy by 2050, the City needs to boost circular employment in other key sectors. The Data Explorer offers data-driven insights on how to do this in industries such as agrifood, the built environment, manufacturing and services. This analysis and recommendations can help the City implement a circular transition that is also just. • 💢 Natural vs. Synthetic: which will come out on top? 👊 The textile industry contributes to climate change, air pollution, water scarcity and other environmental impacts. The urgent need for sustainable practices is clear—but what's the best path forward? Would shifting to more natural materials like cotton and wool effectively reduce these impacts? Or could extending the lifespan of synthetic fibers, while boosting the use of recycled synthetics, be even more beneficial? Share your thoughts and vote in the poll below! • The textile industry is responsible for climate change, water scarcity, and the disruption of water ecosystems. But the circular economy can lower these impacts by up to 50%! Circle Economy’s Circularity Gap Report, created in collaboration with the H&M Foundation, outlines six strategies for a circular textile industry. For each strategy, we consider three levels of ambition: ✅ In a ‘moderate’ approach, reflecting a basic level of ambition, environmental impacts could drop by 17–20%. ✅ A more ‘optimistic’ approach could achieve reductions of 26–35%. ✅ The ‘ambitious’ scenario shows that environmental impacts could decline by 35–50%, underscoring the potential for a radical change. Uncover strategies for circular textiles in the full report: https://lnkd.in/eYci3aS5  How ambitious do you think the textile industry could be? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  • 👚How do European circular economy regulations impact trade partner countries? New studies reveal the hidden risks of the EU textile policies. The EU’s emerging framework of circular textile policies is crucial for a more sustainable and equitable global textile industry. However, the policies’ success hinges on ensuring European trade partners are given the chance to adapt. The project led by Circle Economy, Chatham House and the European Environmental Bureau, together with Business Initiative Leading Development — BUILD (Bangladesh) and The Or Foundation (Ghana), explores the impacts of EU textile policies on Bangladesh, a major textile producer, and Ghana—a key player in reselling, repairing and recycling of textiles. Key challenges faced by these countries include: ⚠️ As EU Member States implement new legislation, workers in the textile value chain may face disruptions, potentially impacting their livelihoods. Compliance costs for businesses, especially SMEs, could lead to price-squeezing, with burdens and risks being pushed down to the most marginalised workers in the value chain. ⚠️ Many workers the textile value chain are employed informally. They are at a higher risk of losing their jobs without support and clear transition pathways. ⚠️The fast-fashion model still dominates the textile industry. Our study anticipates a short-term surge in low-quality textile waste, creating additional strain on already overburdened systems in Ghana and other hubs for used textile imports. What can be done to ensure a fair and just transition for European trading partners? Learn in this article: https://lnkd.in/eqbSTi6E
