The international network of curators of Dutch and Flemish art.
Over ons
CODART is the international network of curators of Dutch and Flemish art. The tremendous popularity and the fact that works of art from the Low Countries of the fifteenth through the nineteenth century are widely disseminated means that CODART’s network is extensive and unique. Major holdings of Dutch and Flemish fine and decorative art are located in approximately 50 countries. Most of these collections – assembled by royals and individuals passionate about Dutch and Flemish art – are currently held in public museums. CODART aims to make this widespread cultural heritage more visible and accessible to an international public. At the same time, the organization aims to increase public knowledge of Dutch and Flemish art, thereby lending a historical phenomenon a contemporary dimension.

Climate change and the decline of biodiversity are pressing issues that capture the imagination of a broad audience, regardless of one’s beliefs on the matter. These themes are no longer confined to natural history and science museums but are increasingly finding a place in exhibitions centered on old masters. But how do you weave these contemporary and often sensitive subjects into an exhibition? For our latest CODARTfeature, we asked two curators to share their experiences in creating an exhibition of old masters that integrates contemporary themes. Which choices did they make and how was a balance achieved between the chosen narrative and the integration of these themes? CODART Collections: Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna The Picture Gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien has its origins in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and by the end of the eighteenth century almost existed in its present form, with the important exception of Johannes Vermeer’s 'The Art of Painting' which entered the collection after World War II. Among the northern fragments of Emperor Rudolf’s gallery today in Vienna are the Bruegel collection, which had come from Rudolf’s brother Ernest, and works by Rudolf’s court artists in Prague such as Bartholomeus Spranger, Lucas van Valckenborch and Adriaen de Vries. Decisive for the founding of the Vienna Picture Gallery was Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662). As regent of the Netherlands (1647-1656) he was able to purchase masterpieces of Early Netherlandish and contemporary Flemish painting in the commercial centres of Antwerp and Brussels, including works by Jan van Eyck, Rubens, Jordaens and Anthony van Dyck. In the early eighteenth century Charles VI brought together in Vienna the Habsburg dynasty’s paintings from the various residences, and his daughter Maria Theresia amassed a lot of Flemish baroque paintings after the suppression of the Jesuit order.
