In October, Akis Antonoudis and colleagues from Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) & Heriot-Watt University presented part of their study within the #ConsenCUS project at the #GHGT conference. As part of this study, they evaluated the technical performance of the ConsenCUS #CO2 capture technology using their validated process models while showcasing the costs associated with its large-scale deployment. Data from Aalborg Portland A/S’s cement plant were used. During the second day of our End Conference we will dive into the technological innovations and demonstration results of the project, the techno-economic performance and next steps. But rest assured. We are happy to provide you with a preview of the highlights of the study! - A #carboncapture efficiency of 95% can be reached at an L/G ratio of 7.9 kg solvent/kggas - A minimum Specific #Energy Consumption of 3.83 GJ/tn CO2 was achieved at a current density of 100 A/m2 (@ 95% CO2 capture efficiency). - Higher capital and O&M cost compared to the current benchmark. - An increase in the LCOP of 77.89 EUR/tn clinker and a Cost of CO2 captured of 100.55 EUR/tn CO2 captured. - For the technology to be competitive in the future, improvements in BPMED stack’s efficiency are required. ConsenCUS designs, builds and tests an innovative CO2 capture method.
Over ons
The EU has set a clear target to curb climate change: a climate neutral industry by 2050. For several crucial EU industries, this means that the CO2 they emit needs to be captured, utilised and/or stored. ConsenCUS aims to provide an industrial roadmap to a net-zero carbon future through “Carbon neutral clusters by electricity-based innovations in Capture, Utilisation and Storage”. We will demonstrate this concept by integrating a demonstration unit at major cement, magnesia and oil refining installations. The project presents technological innovations in the 3 main components of CCUS: (1) carbon capture based on alkali absorption, coupled to a novel electrodialysis cell (100 kg CO2/h), (2) conversion of CO2 to formate and formic acid for the current market, as well as emerging markets and (3) safe cyclic loading of CO2 into salt formations and aquifers for storage. The capture and conversion routes are unique in taking only electricity and water as consumables, while providing energy and cost-efficiency beyond the current industrial standard (targets: TRL 6-7, 1.4 GJ and €34 per tonne CO2). Life cycle analysis and techno-economic evaluations will address how the innovations can be exploited, optimising environmental benefits while providing sound business cases for the three sectors participating and beyond. ConsenCUS also designs so-called CO2 clusters and networks in NW and SE Europe, around our demonstration sites. Our partners are spread across the CO2 value chain and will optimise such clusters based on an interconnected network of emitters fitted with (our) carbon capture and utilisation technology, other CO2 end users and geological storage. Joint infrastructure and operation will drive cost down and encourage collaboration. Importantly, we will create narratives to promote CCUS at communities surrounding these cluster components, by clarifying the social and environmental impact to locals, raising awareness alongside investigating their critical needs.

Just on the verge of 2024, GAFT - Sustainable Aviation Fuel Technology, sister company of project partner Coval Energy, issued a press release about our demo site in Greece at the Grecian Magnesite S.A. As previously reported, our demo site is now at its third and final location. Here, industrial emissions of CO2 released through the production process is converted into formic acid - a precursor of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The breakthrough technology provides scalable, environmentally friendly solutions for the aviation sector and supports EU targets for the use of SAF by 2030. Two weeks ago, we had the privilege of participating in the LANDMARC Horizon2020 Final Event ‘𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞’ in Brussels. This event, hosted in collaboration with RESCUE climate, brought together EU policymakers, researchers, and industry experts to discuss critical policies shaping the future of #CarbonCapture, Utilisation, and Storage (#CCUS), #Carbon Farming, and Carbon Removal. Our contribution focused on EU policy framework for CCUS – a vital element in reducing #carbonfootprint by capturing, storing, and utilising fossil carbon emissions – with a presentation by Luciana Miu, PhD from Energy Policy Group about how policy can keep up with the #innovations of EU projects and Dirk Koppert from New Energy Coalition as panellist on policy discussion. In addition to the insightful event, we had the opportunity to visit the venue for our Final Event and left feeling inspired by the ideas and lessons learned from the LANDMARC Horizon2020 Final Event. These takeaways will undoubtedly shape ours. A huge thank you to the organisers, our co-panellists, and everyone who contributed. Events like this reinforce the importance of collaborative approaches to achieving our climate goals. #ConsenCUS #H2020 #research #energy #energytransition #co2

The #ConsenCUS installation landed in Greece. A great timelapse on how we build up the installation at Grecian Magnesite S.A. in Greece. This installation was first build and tested in Aalborg Portland A/S’s Rørdal Cement Production site in Denmark, then was installed at OMV Petrom's Petrobrazi Refinery in Romania and is now at its final destination! We look forward to more testing hours and can't wait for the results 🤩 Major gratitude for partner DTU - Technical University of Denmark for making this traveling demonstration possible! #H2020 #research #innovation #energy #energytransition #ccus #carbon #co2 #carboncapture #carbonfootprint

The #ConsenCUS project is investigating the use of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3) as cost-effective and environmentally friendly solvents for #carboncapture. A critical challenge is their slower absorption kinetics, which increases the size and cost of equipment. To address this, Friday Ochedi, John Andresen, and Mijndert Van der Spek from Heriot-Watt University are exploring potassium glycinate as a promoter to enhance absorption rates. Highlights of the #research: - The challenge of potassium glycinate: susceptible to oxidative degradation, potentially impacting performance and costs. - The study identifies degradation products and mechanisms, offering solutions to enhance stability. - The findings provide valuable insights on the stability and performance trade-offs of using glycine as a promoter in the potassium-based #carbon capture solvents. Proud that ConsenCUS is part of this journey with Aalborg Portland A/S! Important steps for Carbon Capture!
How to get 220 M euro for carbon capture? Aalborg Portland A/S just received funds from the EU Innovation Fond. Today, Jesper Sand Damtoft presented the ACCSION project at a workshop on the future of energy (in Denmark). Jesper was kind to remember that demonstration projects such as CORT, ConsenCUS and CASPER were part of journey towards the 220 M euro funding. If you are interested in carbon capture in your company, feel free to reach out! Many thanks to: INNO-CCUS for funding the CORT and CASPER projects EU Horizon 2020 for funding the ConsenCUS project
