📢 We are thrilled to announce the name of the new-to-science deep-sea coral! Our expert judging panel selected the Golden Labyrinth coral (𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘢) 🪸 submitted by Elizabeth Moore from the US🇺🇸. Elizabeth was inspired by the Greek historian Herodotus, who was one of the earliest scholars to describe the existence of a labyrinth. As for labyrinths, they're sacred, they're holy, they're mysterious. And she wanted to convey this and connect this to the coral and the deep ocean. A big thank you to our judging panel Michelle Taylor, Dr. Jan Steger Senckenberg Ocean Species Alliance (SOSA), Bibiana Nassongole, and Professor Louise Allcock. Hear our Director Sian Owen talking about the competition, which highlights just how much more we have to discover about the deep sea 🌊 https://lnkd.in/dGKhc5Fi #ProtectSeamounts #DefendTheDeep

Non-profitorganisaties
We want robust action to be taken to protect the ocean depths, their remarkable species and the secrets they hold.
Over ons
The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) comprises over 100 member organizations, from non-government organizations and fishers organizations to law and policy institutes worldwide, working together under the umbrella of the DSCC to protect vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems and safeguard long-term health, integrity and resilience of this crucial part of the ocean. In this time of converging biodiversity and climate crises, protecting the ocean – our planet’s life support system – is more critical than ever. The DSCC works to ensure the continued health and productivity of deep-sea habitats and species. Our top priority is the urgent closure of all vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) of the deep sea to any form of exploitation. #DefendTheDeep / #DeepSea / #BottomTrawling / #SaveOurSeamounts / #DeepSeaMining / #SeabedMining / #Seamounts

“Contrary to popular belief, the Arctic Ocean actually has a very rich diversity of organisms," says Dr. Hanieh Saeedi, one of a group of 12 scientists who joined an expedition to the deep waters of the Arctic. This latest study shows that the Arctic Ocean boasts a great diversity of habitats and organisms, many of which have been poorly studied to date. Alongside the numerous deep-sea organisms discovered, the team found that the Arctic features a wide variety of habitats and structures—from submarine canyons to #seamounts and extensive cold-water coral reefs. https://lnkd.in/euZZqmsR Senckenberg Nature Research

Risky business! #DeepSeaMining presents potential collective liabilities for all involved in this high-risk industry, even those who don't want it. In our new factsheet, we explore the significant risks to vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems and potential impacts on climate and Indigenous and coastal communities. To uphold international commitments to protect marine biodiversity and limit climate change, and avoid incurring costly liabilities, we suggest that States should refrain from sponsoring exploitation contracts and agree to a moratorium on deep-sea mining. Deep sea mining: mining for metals or trouble❓ Planet Tracker’s latest report analyses the 12 countries most economically dependent on land-based mining of copper, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. From 2018 to 2022 these metals: ➡️ Generated over $560 billion annually in exports. ➡️ Made up 39% of total export earnings. ➡️ Were equivalent to 16% GDP on average. Deep sea mining poses a significant economic risk to these countries, 6 of which are lower middle- or low-income, making them highly vulnerable to price shocks from deep sea mining. Added to this are the risks deep sea mining poses to ocean ecosystems, the climate, natural capital, corporate profits, and investor returns. ❌ There is no just transition to deep sea mining. Norway must rethink its position on #DeepSeaMining in the Arctic Ocean! The only way forward is a moratorium - 50 European MPs are calling on the Norwegian government Stortinget to stop this destructive practice before it's too late. #DefendTheDeep Marie Toussaint Emma Fourreau
"We (...) solemnly call on the Norwegian government and the Stortinget to stop the process of this highly destructive industry in the Arctic." Last week, a letter to the Norwegian government and parliament urging them to halt plans for #deepseamining in Arctic waters was signed by 50 members of the European Parliament, citing among others EASAC's Statement on Deep-Sea Mining (https://lnkd.in/etiagySH). Norway’s recent announcement to potentially issue licenses for deep-sea mining in the Arctic by 2025 goes against earlier reassurances and poses significant risks to marine biodiversity, Arctic ecosystems, and global climate stability. The letter highlights various concerns such as ecological harm and nuclear contamination risks and urges #Norway to cease its licensing process and implement a #moratorium on deep-sea mining. At #COP16Colombia, we brought the deep sea into the biodiversity conversation. 🎉 At our side event, we celebrated 20 years of deep-sea advocacy and discussed with our panelists why the deep sea and its fragile ecosystems need urgent conservation action. In the words of Peter Thomson, UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, "it's the most remarkable marine life on the planet. Before we do anything more, we must research to understand it." #DefendTheDeep #ProtectSeamounts #NatureIsAlsoBlue Sian Owen Matthew Gianni Anne-Sophie Roux Grethel Aguilar Astrid Puentes Riaño Ralph Regenvanu Evelyn Katu Wohuinangu IUCN

"#DeepSeaMining is not the answer to the climate crisis. Companies, scientists, and governments are saying we can manage a sustainable green transition without deep seabed mining". Deep-sea mining risks irreversible biodiversity loss and disrupting the deep’s ability to act as our natural carbon sink–crucial for regulating our climate. World leaders at #COP29 must support a moratorium and #DefendTheDeep. "The #DeepSea is our greatest ally in buffering against the effects of #ClimateChange. So it's critically important that the deep sea is present within the climate negotiations." - DSCC Director, Sian Owen. At #COP29, let’s not forget the deep sea—a critical ally in climate resilience. From carbon storage to biodiversity, protecting our deep sea means protecting our planet. #DefendTheDeep
