2024 marked our 20th anniversary of deep-sea advocacy and what a year has been! We celebrated with the launch of our new website, gathered more support against #DeepSeaMining (32 countries so far) and achieved some great wins for deep-sea protection. We celebrated #DeepDay, were featured in the BBC StoryWorks 'Blue Horizons' online series, you named a new-to-science coral and we launched our new seamount campaign, #OceanLifelines. We look forward to continuing our work in 2025 with our members and partners to ensure we #DefendTheDeep!

#Seamounts support the health of the ocean – they are our #OceanLifelines. But these underwater mountains are under threat from bottom trawling. Seamounts are not only rich feeding grounds but also vital spawning areas for numerous fish species. Tuna, sharks, marine mammals, and seabirds all flock to seamounts. Two new IPBES reports confirm biodiversity is declining globally, regionally, and locally due to human activities, with even more species at risk of extinction. If current “business as usual” trends continue, the outcomes will be extremely poor for biodiversity. #DeepSeaMining would only worsen this crisis. Science indicates that deep-sea mining causes permanent, irreversible biodiversity loss—wiping out species we haven’t even discovered yet. 🌊 We must act now to safeguard deep-sea life and halt biodiversity loss before it's too late with a moratorium on this destructive industry. Should we really disturb the seafloor with #DeepSeaMining when the numbers don’t even add up? Professor Elizabeth Steyn, from the University of Calgary, raises critical concerns about the environmental, economic, and ethical implications of deep seabed mining. It questions whether disrupting ocean ecosystems for minimal financial gain and uncertain mineral demand is justifiable. A groundbreaking new seafloor map has revealed thousands of previously unknown underwater mountains and hills. The map, created with radar data, offers the most detailed view of the ocean floor to date. The maps will reshape scientists’ knowledge of ocean currents, and the number of mapped seamounts could double 🗻 Seamounts - #OceanLifelines - are known to drive ocean currents back to the surface, a critical mechanism in the “conveyor belt” of ocean currents that transport heat, nutrients, and carbon dioxide, playing a critical role in climate, ocean mixing, and marine ecosystems. This discovery is a major step forward in understanding Earth’s last frontier – the ocean - as much of the seafloor remains a mystery.
