Last month we visited the Wader Study Group Conference in Montpellier. In addition to listening to many inspiring lectures, we also participated in the coastal breeding plovers workshop organized by Dominic Cimiotti and Melanie Theel (NABU). Our colleague Floor Arts gave a lecture about changes in landscape and the effect on the plover population in the Dutch Delta. Of course, we also feasted our eyes outside the conference room. We visited the Regional Park of the Camargue and the Crau and saw no less than 154 species of birds in 4 days. Highlights were an adult Bonelli’s Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, 5 Red-footed Falcons, Eleonora’s Falcon, at least 150 Lesser Kestrels, Dotterel, 12 European Rollers, Spectacled Warbler and loads of shorebirds, gulls, terns and flamingos.
