❗ Selling to private equity? This is how long it'll take you (and your PE owner) to exit fully.   Very insightful data from Sid Jain of Gain.pro, focused on majority PE-backed entries in Europe.   I really like this graph, as this topics comes up so many times when discussing exit options with founders.   💡 When founders ask us at torq.partners for advice on exiting their company, one of the super interesting discussions that always arises is around horizon (which can also differ per shareholder).   Why is this relevant? Because different exit avenues have different horizons. 🕰️ And don't forget that likely - after selling your company - you will need to stay on for at least 1.5 to 2 years (if you don't want to get a hefty discount on your selling price due to leaver clauses).   Not considering an earn-out of course, which could run for longer than 2 years.   ➡️ So are you considering to sell to private equity, and want to know how long you will need to continue your commitment to your company?   Let's take some very high level numbers, counting from today.   The next six to twelve months, you'll be preparing your own company for the sale and selling to your new private equity partner.   ⏳ Timeline: 6 to 12 months.   After that, I used to say "it depends per PE, but most like to exit after 5 years". Which is pretty much the standard (or at least, people say).   However this chart adds some more intelligence to that, and shows that historically, over 50% of PE companies actually exit in year six.   Next to that, on average, one-quarter of PE businesses exit by year 4 and three-quarters by year 10.   ⌛ Timeline: 6 to 12 months + likely 6 years.   And - if you haven't made yourself obsolete through hiring (or promoting) someone - you very likely will get another 1.5 - 2 year leaver clause after exiting together with the PE fund. This ends our timeline at 6 to 12 months + 6 years + 2 years = ~9 years (give this latest exit isn't to a new PE, of course).   I am purposefully oversimplifying and must mention there are lots of nuances and events that could influence the above mentioned timelines. Also there are PE's who do not have an exit horizon. Or stray from this average for some other reason.   But if staying at the helm of your company for at least the next 7 - 9 years doesn't excite you? Probably PE isn't the route for you.
