🔎 RESEARCH THROUGH THE EYES OF EXECUTIVES: WHAT WILL 2024 BRING FOR THE INTERNATIONAL RETAIL SECTOR? What themes are high on the agenda of retail executives in 2024? What are the challenges facing the retail sector this year? Once again in 2024, the Ebeltoft Group collaborated with the World Retail Congress to develop a global research piece on the challenges and prospects of the global retail industry. Lead by our Dutch partner Q&A Retail, the study focused on prevalent themes such as digitalisation, innovating with AI, the war on talent and sustainable growth. Here are 6 key insights from the report: 💹 Retailers generally share a positive outlook on the future of their business: they expect modest growth in 2024 under pressure from operational costs such as rent and salaries. Expectations for the development of the retail sector as a whole in 2024 are varied. 👥 Almost all respondents are struggling to find and retain talent: scarcity is greatest in stores, but also at head office, for example in the IT & Tech department. Staff shortages are thus seen as one of the greatest challenges for the sector in 2024. 💼 Business models must constantly evolve under the influence of consumer behaviour: adapting to and predicting consumer behaviour is at the top of the agenda in 2024. Almost 1 in 5 respondents share the need for fundamental change in their business model to remain future-proof. 🤖 Integration of AI is seen as crucial to stay ahead of the competition: three quarters of respondents underline the urgency of innovating with AI to stay up-to-date. However, many face shortages of specialists (talent), time and budgets to make real strides on this opportunity. 🌍 Sustainability still offers room for improvement: many respondents share the desire to perform better on sustainability. In 2024, they will therefore take a critical look at opportunities in circularity, evaluating their partner network in the value chain on ESG factors and improving diversity. 🛍️ The physical store is seen as the most commercially relevant channel towards 2030, but the share of digital continues to grow: the study underlines the important role the physical channel still plays in retailers' channel portfolio. However, a shift in the contribution of channels to sales is apparent, with the share of digital channels set to continue growing.
