🎬 One of the major challenges for migration policy is the diversity of migrant motivations, backgrounds and the decisions they take. A policy for all migrants may have very different effects on different migrant groups. DYNAMIG is researching the various drives, hopes and experiences of an array of different groups to try and shine a light on this incredibly complicated issue. 📝 The many takeaways from our productive event on the political economy of the energy transition in the Global South have been released! Organised with The Policy Practice, The World Bank and Thinking and Working Politically Community of Practice. A real pleasure to discuss Peter Schwartzstein's excellent book The Heat and The Fury - On the Frontlines of Climate Violence, together with Róisín Drury and Hanne Louise Knaepen. Our latest policy brief on "From Patchwork to Partnership: EU-AU Cyber Cooperation" is now available. Authored by Félix Arteaga (Elcano Royal Institute ), with reviews from Melody Musoni, PhD (ECDPM 🌍), Niels Keijzer (German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), and Dora Meredith (ODI Europe). 🔅 How can labour mobility better respond to sectoral labour shortages? 🔅 How the EU we better attract and retain talent and create partnerships that benefits labour migrants, origin and destination countries? 🔅 What are barriers in systems and labour migration infrastructure that need to be overcome? 🔅 And how can private sector actors work together with authorities on generating the right data to make informed choices? ❇ It was great to discuss discuss these and many more questions at this years' MPF Labour Migration Practitioners Network Conference organised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) I presented the collaborative work my ECDPM colleagues Amanda Bisong, Jamie Slater and Pauline Veron and I did in a consortium with CASE (Agnieszka Kulesa), OSMOS (Žilvinas Švedkauskas) and LAmP (Salvatore Petronella) as well as Teresa Vetter from Visuality. In a team and with funding from MPF we mapped all 27 EU MS labour migration pathways, how they function and are being utilised in practice. Overall, in almost all EU member states there is sensitivity around the topic of migration, which affects discussions and policy-making on labour migration of non-EU nationals. However, beneath the overall EU wide trends, many nuanced stories emerge regarding labour migration policy.  EU MS are embracing a pragmatic – though selective – approach to labour migrants. While there are growing needs for skills, knowledge and workers at various skill levels, EU MS legal labour migration pathways tend to cater more strongly to highly-skilled TCNs.
