📦 As Europe advances its sustainability goals, fibre-based packaging plays a key role in transitioning to a circular, low-carbon economy. It is a great solution to achieve these objectives with a recycling rate of 83.2%, high use of secondary materials, and strong CO2 reduction potential. ♻️ In 2024, Fibre Packaging Europe (FPE) launched its first Manifesto, outlining policy recommendations to reduce fossil fuel dependence and promote harmonised food safety standards. Looking ahead, FPE is aligned with upcoming EU initiatives like the Circular Economy Act, the PPWR secondary legislation, the Clean Industrial Deal and the Bioeconomy Strategy, aiming to boost Europe’s resilience and competitiveness.   ➡️ The next five years are crucial for solidifying Europe’s leadership in sustainable packaging. 🌍 Ensuring Universal Access to Essential Services: MLPS Joins Call to Bridge the Digital Divide 📢 We’re proud to announce that MLPS has co-signed a campaign alongside 500+ organizations, advocating for the European Union to guarantee offline access to all essential services. As digitalization accelerates, offline alternatives are disappearing, leaving millions at risk of exclusion. Shockingly, 40% of Europe’s population still lacks basic digital skills. This persistent digital divide threatens to undermine EU values of universal access and equal treatment, as enshrined in the European Pillar of Social Rights (principle 20). 💡 Why This Matters: Everyone, regardless of their digital literacy, deserves equal access to critical services like healthcare, social support, and medicine information. Paper leaflets are the only failsafe source of healthcare information for patients. Inclusive systems are essential to uphold social cohesion and protect vulnerable populations. 📝 Myth vs. Truth: Medical Leaflets and Language Accessibility Myth: Paper leaflets can’t cater to the language needs of smaller EU Member States.   Truth: Accessibility is at the heart of the leaflet industry. Even in countries with lesser-used languages, our sector is fully prepared to support specific language needs. Removing paper leaflets isn’t the solution—collaboration is. With the right partnerships, leaflet printers can provide targeted support, producing smaller print runs (starting at just 1,000 copies) to ensure that all patients, regardless of language, have access to critical medical information. Accessible information matters. Medical leaflets are more than paper—they are an essential safety net. Almost 45% of the EU population between the age of 16 - 74 still lack basic digital skills to access health information online. There is no reliant data on the level of digital skills on patients above the age of 74. Going digital-only risks leaving millions without crucial medical guidance.
