This week, we took part in "AI in Healthcare: Practical Solutions for Urgent Global Challenges", an event co-organised by the European Commission and the Health Data Hub as part of the AI Action Summit. Our Senior Policy Officer, Milana Trucl, joined the roundtable "AI in Healthcare: Trust, Transparency & Ethics – What Does It Take?" to discuss AI's role in healthcare, key challenges, and the urgent need for public investment in AI-driven solutions that genuinely benefit patients. 🗣️ She emphasised: "AI is not the goal – it’s a tool to simplify healthcare, enhance patient care, and improve outcomes. If it doesn’t make care more accessible, efficient, and personalised, it risks adding complexity instead of truly enabling better health." 💬 How do you think #AI can best support patients and #healthcare professionals?

Today, our Head of Policy Claudia Louati joined the 2nd meeting of the Forum of the Critical Medicines Alliance, namely a panel discussion on international partnerships and solidarity. 🗣️ Claudia highlighted the urgent need to address medicine shortages, emphasising their major and direct impact on patients and our healthcare systems. She stressed the importance of finding collective solutions that prioritise patients' interests, ultimately working towards a true universal access to healthcare for all. The discussion also provided an opportunity for us to advocate for a comprehensive impact assessment of the proposed recommendations in the draft version of the Strategic Report of the Critical Medicines Alliance. Such assessment is essential to prevent unintended consequences for patients and the EU healthcare systems. ✍ EPF is currently providing feedback on the latest version of the Strategic Report of the Alliance and is working on the call for evidence published by DG Santé for a future Critical Medicines Act that might be published mid-March. Through these actions, EPF stands ready to support efforts that put in place a comprehensive, patient-centred system to prevent shortages, mitigate the impact on patient communities, ensure communication and transparency and equitable access to medicines for all. The IDERHA project, of which we are a partner, is conducting a survey to validate its findings on 10 thematic areas related to health data sharing, access, and use. The team has identified 10 key thematic areas where policy recommendations could significantly improve health data utilization. Your input will be crucial in shaping the ongoing work within the project, including how health data is used to improve patient outcomes and advance medical research. 🗓️ Deadline to respond: 14th March 2025 ▶️ Find the details here: https://lnkd.in/e2f2J8nT ▶️ More information about the project: https://lnkd.in/d-vRs494 #HealthData

Statement on the new restrictions on civil society’s role in EU policymaking 🚫 With the latest changes, LIFE operating grants can no longer be used for policy and advocacy activities targeting EU policymakers. This sets a worrying precedent and could lead to similar developments in other policy areas and funding programmes, including in health. We are concerned about the shrinking civic space, as well as excessive politicisation of the role of civil society in the public debate. Civil society organisations (CSOs) should be seen as a force for constructive proposals that reflect both the values of the communities they represent and the broader public interest. 📢 Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/dJ8eMrTc #EU4Health European Commission Ursula von der Leyen

At the European Patients' Forum, we reaffirm our strong support for the World Health Organization and the vital work of WHO Regional Office for Europe in protecting public health, patient safety, and building resilient and patient-centred healthcare systems across the region. In these uncertain times, WHO Europe stands at the core of all efforts to build healthier and more resilient communities: from responding to health emergencies to tackling long-term health priorities such as #AMR, digital transformation, and achieving universal health coverage for all. As the voice of patient communities across Europe, EPF is part of key initiatives such as the Novel Medicines Platform and strongly supports WHO Europe’s work to involve and develop best practices for engagement of Non-State Actors, in line with the #WHA77 Resolution on Social Participation. We remain committed to working alongside WHO Europe to ensure that patients are actively involved in shaping health policies that impact their lives ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ddTm9b4y Now more than ever, we need strong, well-resourced public health institutions that can uphold the right to health for all. Strong and stable investment in health also means support for civil society organisations who play a key role in bridging the gap between policy and people’s needs.

The European Health Data Space (EHDS) Regulation is expected to come into force in April 2025, more than three years after it was initially proposed by the European Commission. With this regulation, patients in the EU will be able to access their health data electronically, wherever they are in the EU. Another benefit is that health data can be used for secondary purposes, such as public interest, policy making and research. Read our analysis to know more about the implications of the EHDS Regulation for patient communities ➡️ https://bit.ly/4gtbvKC #HealthData #EuropeanHealthDataSpace #EHDS

Today is World Cancer Day! This year's theme, "United by Unique", puts people and patients' stories at the centre of the conversation. We stand with the global health community in highlighting the importance of patient-centred care in the treatment of diseases such as cancer. We contribute to this mission through our involvement in EU-funded projects: 🔬 H2O empowers patients with digital tools to monitor their health outcomes, and aims to establish Observatories as legal entities and running services in three disease areas: cancer, diabetes, and IBD. 🔬 IDERHA aims to improve clinical decision-making and enhance patient access to health innovations by leveraging health data, with a focus on lung cancer. 🔬 IMMUcan’s goal is to understand how the immune system and tumours interact and the impact of therapeutic interventions.
