Ecosystem Services Partnership
Milieudiensten
Worldwide network to enhance science, policy&practice of ecosystem services for conservation and sustainable development
Over ons
The Ecosystem Services Partnership is a worldwide network working to enhance the science and practical application of ecosystem services. ESP aims to strengthen communication, coordination and cooperation, and to build a strong network of individuals and organizations. ESP encourages a diversity of approaches, while reducing unnecessary duplication of effort in the conceptualization and application of ecosystem services. By raising the profile of ecosystem services and promoting better practice, the ESP will also increase opportunities for financial support and help focus the funding of individual organizations for more efficient utilization of existing funds.

Last night, we were featured in VPRO Tegenlicht episode titled "Greed is Green"—a title that initially raised some eyebrows here, but the substance of the program truly hit home. 🎥🌍 The episode dives into the pivotal question: What role do finance and the economy play in accelerating—or solving—climate change and biodiversity loss? It paints a strong, relevant overview of key developments reshaping these systems and, most excitingly, includes our very own Vince van 't Hoff. 🎉👏 Vince, we are so proud of you! Standing in front of the camera on national television and explaining our Make Nature Count work with the municipality of Eindhoven is no small feat. Your clarity, passion, and dedication shine through—you’re truly one of a kind! 🙌 And I have to admit, last week was tough. After an intense fall packed with the CBD CoP16, our 5th European Ecosystem Services Partnership conference, and several year-end project deadlines, exhaustion got the better of me. For a moment, the marginal outcomes of various CoPs and the relentless flow of bad news made me question if what we do even matters. Is it just a drop in the ocean? But then, after a restorative weekend and watching this program, something shifted. It was a powerful reminder that we’re not alone in this. There’s a growing movement—people from all disciplines pushing forward, creating a transition that’s already underway. We are reshaping the economy and building a more sustainable future. Seeing that was exactly the inspiration I needed. A heartfelt thank you to Stephane Kaas for producing such a clear, respectful, nuanced, and inspiring program. Your thoughtful approach and inclusion of our input made this an impactful piece. And thank you to everyone driving this work forward— Gemeente Eindhoven (the municipality of Eindhoven; Dennis Kaspori, Rik Thijs), Netherlands Enterprise Agency (specifically Caroline Van Leenders), ASN Bank (Roel Nozeman), European Central Bank (Frank Elderson, Christiaan Pattipeilohy), and Partnership for Biodiversity Accounting Financials (PBAF, Wijnand Broer), RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (Ton de Nijs) to name a few exceptional ones ;-). Together, we’re making it happen. 🌱💪 You can watch the Tegenlicht episode here: https://lnkd.in/eazMYgZP #MakeNatureCount #Biodiversity #FinanceForGood #Tegenlicht #Collaboration #EcosystemServices

Just returned from an inspiring 4 days at the Ecosystem Services Partnership Europe Conference in #Wageningen with my colleges Dr. Sophie Peter and Christina Trujillo Frede from ISOE – Institut für sozial-ökologische Forschung 🌍 The conference was filled with intriguing presentations and panel discussions exploring the deep interconnections between ecosystem and human health. I had the opportunity to present our research on the effectiveness of nationwide intervention in Germany conducted by and in collaboration with DIE ZEIT. We showed that the topic of gardening can be successfully used to engage people in insect conservation behaviour. Thank you to everyone for the stimulating questions and helpful feedback! A highlight for me was also this morning's panel discussion, which underscored the urgent need for a paradigm shift in values and norms - making clear that psychological research must play a more prominent role in biodiversity and ecosystem research.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to attend the 5th Ecosystem Services Partnership in Wageningen, Netherlands, where I hosted a session titled "Operationalizing the IPBES Framework in Place-Based Socio-Ecological Systems Research." It was an incredible platform to showcase my research on the Multifunctionality of the Kilimanjaro social-ecological system, where we bring together social and ecological data to show how the system can provide multiple benefits to diverse social groups. The conference provided a great opportunity to network and collaborate with over 500 like-minded individuals from government institutions, NGOs, the private sector, and academia. A huge thank you to the organizers, speakers, and participants for creating such a dynamic and enriching environment!

Yesterday I had the privilege to be part of Dolf Groot’s farewell address during the 5th European Ecosystem Services Partnership conference. This truly remarkable man managed to move the entire audience to tears with his humour and humbleness. He set out his career, starting in the Galapagos and then co-authoring the groundbreaking article in Nature ‘Pricing the Planet’ in the 90’s. Dolf should however not just be honoured for his academic contributions in the field of ecosystem services, but he also chaired ESP with enormous dedication for years. This helped to make ecosystem services science evolve globally and established a worldwide movement that to this day supports positive impact for nature conservation and regeneration in business, finance and the wider society. I’ve had the privilege to work closely with Dolf for 7 years and learnt from his kind stubborn leadership style and knowledge. It’s with kindness, collaboration and perseverance that communities grow! His words were deeply moving and I felt extremely honoured to be mentioned in his farewell address after highly esteemed scientists such as Robert Costanza: ‘Martine has been instrumental in linking the ecosystem services to the business and finance community’. These words and recognition mean the world to me. ☺️ I’m glad to see that the work I started back in 2004 linking sustainable culture with business has supported a transition and is recognised. I will continue this work together with Ecosystem Services Partnership & Capitals Coalition. In turn I would like to recognise the people in the community who enabled me to develop this. Above all, I hope that ESP will remain this great collaborative community in the vein of Dolf’s leadership of humor, intellect and kindness! Thank you Dolf Groot Benjamin Burkhard, Louise (Wieteke) Willemen 🟥 Luis Inostroza, Arnold van Vliet and good luck new EC Fernando Martins, Luke Brander Solen Le Clec'h and others! Matthew Smith. Also, a big shout out to my dear former colleagues Iskra Konovska Diane Ingabire and Mieke Siebers for all the hard work they did in pulling this conference off and supporting #ESP in its growth!

📣 Last week, I had the pleasure of attending and contributing to the 5th European Ecosystem Services Partnership conference in Wageningen, together with a large team of Leiden Science - Universiteit Leiden. My reflections on and contributions to the conference will follow soon in another post. For now, I am so proud to share that Meng Li 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🏆 ! The competition was stiff, with over 500 people attending and well over 50 posters being presented. Roy Remme, Peter van Bodegom and I are very proud supervisors. The poster, entitled '𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩? 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚-𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 🌳 , 𝙪𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨' outlines the systematic analysis Meng has conducted, as part of her PhD, on over 5️⃣ 0️⃣0️⃣ empirical cases in almost 200 cities worldwide 🌏 . We assess to what extent nature-based solutions address urban challenges, and how the outcomes are measured 📊 . The latter is particularly important in the light of seeking multifunctional and adaptable nature-based solutions in cities. 🗞️ A preprint on the global analysis can be found here: https://lnkd.in/efAmkz_g 🗞️ A preprint on the biodiversity aspects can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eAmv5vYP It was a particularly special moment for me, as the prize was awarded by my former supervisor, Dolf 𝗱𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁, during his farewell conference as ESP chair. ♻️ Thanks also to the CML team of Joeri Morpurgo, Janneke van Oorschot, Rita Sousa Silva, Ming Fricke and Yuanyuan Mao - it was great to be part of a Leiden University team at the conference!
