  • 🌍 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀: 𝗔 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ♻️ In the world of textile recycling, downcycling plays a role, but is it enough? 🤔 Downcycling involves reprocessing discarded textiles into new consumer or industrial products, often through mechanical processes. While this approach prevents waste and gives materials a second life, the results often fall short of their original potential: 🔹 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱: Garments are cut apart for wipers, shredded into fibers for insulation or filling, or bonded for geo-textiles and non-wovens. 🔹 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Once downcycled, products rarely re-enter the textile supply chain. Unfortunately, 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲-𝘁𝗼-𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 is easier said than done. Whether garments can be recycled into new textiles depends on their quality and fiber composition. Mixed fibers, low-quality materials, or fabrics with heavy treatments make the process more challenging. While downcycling isn’t bad, it’s not ideal. Most materials lose value and viability in the process, limiting their use to lower-grade applications. For instance, high-quality fabrics transformed into insulation can no longer contribute to creating new garments. At Erdotex, the goal is clear: 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿-𝘁𝗼-𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲-𝘁𝗼-𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴. By preserving the integrity of materials, we can promote a truly circular economy where discarded garments become the foundation for new fashion, not just filler. Downcycling is a step, but let’s aim higher. Together, we can support smarter sorting, better recycling, and sustainable solutions that keep textiles where they belong: in the textile supply chain. 🌱

Designing for Transformation of the Fashion Industry 👗 Last week, The Biomimicry Institute hosted a multi-day event that marked the beginning of Phase II for our Designing for Transformation (D4T) Project. This initiative, supported by the Laudes Foundation, brought together our pilot partners—Circle Economy, Beneficial Design Institute, and The Or Foundation—at the Fashion for Good space in Amsterdam, aiming to address the critical issue of fashion and textile waste. Fashion and Textile waste is a global issue that calls for a systemic approach beyond just technical solutions, taking into account broader social, economic, and environmental contexts. Branson Skinner, Co-Founder of The Or Foundation, reminds us, “Everything's going to hit the Earth at some point, so we cannot juggle this above nature indefinitely.” 🌎 Here is a glimpse of our 3-day immersion in Amsterdam: 📅 February 18th: Visited the Erdotex Group facility in Rotterdam. There, we explored the complexities of textile waste sorting. With over 30 years of experience, Erdotex processes about 45,000 tons of raw materials annually across their various facilities globally. 🚀 February 19th: The D4T Kickoff! Bringing together our Pilot Partners and sharing progress updates on the work being done on the ground in the Netherlands, Germany, and Ghana. 🤝🏽  February 20th: Hosted a meetup for local biomimicry enthusiasts! We enjoyed amazing discussions with Learn Biomimicry, Biomimicry Centre Nederland, and biomimicryNL among others who joined us that evening. As we embark on the next phase of the D4T Project with our pilot initiatives in the Netherlands, Germany, and Ghana, we are reminded of the importance of our mission. We are thankful for the dedication and vision of our partners, who are instrumental in implementing these transformative solutions on the ground. Together, we are striving towards a more circular and regenerative fashion system, inspired by the very essence of nature. 🌱 #Biomimicry #DesignForTransformation #TheNatureOfFashion

  • 𝐄𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐱 & 𝐄𝐑𝐏 𝐍𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝: 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 At Erdotex, we believe that building a truly circular textile industry requires strong partnerships. We’re proud to be among the first companies to collaborate with ERP Netherlands to drive real change in textile collection, sorting, and recycling. With the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles now in effect, the industry must take responsibility—not just for compliance, but for real systemic improvements: 🔹 Better textile collection to keep valuable materials in the loop 🔹 More second-hand clothing sales in the Netherlands to extend garment lifecycles 🔹 Enhanced sorting & monitoring of exported textiles to ensure responsible reuse 🔹 Automation in sorting processes for efficiency and scalability 🔹 Higher-quality fiber-to-fiber recycling to close the loop At Erdotex, we see this as an opportunity to transform the industry and solve critical challenges. The textile sector is under pressure, and while regulations are tightening, collaboration will be key to making circularity a reality. This milestone was marked during the official press moment, where Mert Ozturk, Dennis Dorst and Marieke Koemans-Kokkelink represented Erdotex. With ERP Nederland and our partners, we’re committed to raising awareness, improving textile flows, and setting new standards for sustainable textile management. What’s the biggest challenge you see in creating a circular textile system? Let’s discuss! 👇 Read the entire article (in Dutch) here: https://bit.ly/42CseYO #CircularTextiles #TextileRecycling #Sustainability #EPR #SecondHandFashion

  • 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬? Let's review the process step by step: 🛍️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 Consumers drive every piece of garment on the market, due to demand. Today we focus on consumers as the start of the cycle. As a consumer, you decide whether you buy vintage, second-hand, fast-fashion, or high-quality garments. But as a consumer, many (luckily) donate their clothes into the designated bins. What happens after donating your worn clothes? We will tell you. 🚛 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 Once the garments are donated, the textiles are collected by special collecting companies, many of which specialize in textiles. Collecting can be done in various ways, such as home-to-home collecting and donating bins. Once collected, there is a pre-selection to sort out the garbage. Once the collection and pre-sorting are complete, the rest of the garments go to Erdotex to start the sorting process. 🏢 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 Arriving at Erdotex Ridderkerk, the garments are sorted into categories like trousers, shirts, sweaters, and shoes. This is the first step in the sorting process. Afterward, the textiles are sorted into 400 categories! These categories are based on demand in the second-hand markets. That is why we sort for different scenarios. Retail and recycle. 👕 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 The sorting is oriented towards maximizing the life cycle of every garment as efficiently as possible. During the sorting process, we collected textiles that could be marketed for reuse to consumers. After this step, the chain starts again from the top, with consumers buying the garments. ♻️ 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 Lastly, the textiles that are not marked for reuse are transported to recyclers for treatment within our extensive network. In terms of recycling, circular solutions are maximized to close the loop with as many fiber types as currently possible.  Do you have any questions about our sorting process or our services for your business? • 🌍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! Misinformation about the secondhand clothing trade is threatening livelihoods and sustainability efforts globally, according to GlobalData. The Mitumba Consortium Association of Kenya (MCAK) is calling for action to replace myths with evidence-based policymaking. 🧵 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀: ✅ Over 95% of imported secondhand clothes are not waste, debunking the widely cited 40% waste claim. ✅ This trade supports 𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟲.𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 in Kenya, promoting circularity and economic resilience. ✅ Operators face growing challenges from taxes and regulations, while fast fashion’s overproduction continues to rise unchecked. MCAK Chairperson Teresia Wairimu Njenga has led a global advocacy campaign, highlighting how secondhand clothing exemplifies the circular economy and offers solutions to the world’s textile overproduction crisis. 📢 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Policymakers must focus on facts, not flawed narratives. Robust data shows that secondhand trade is not the problem but part of the solution. Investments should target 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and local waste management, not penalize sustainable practices. 💬“𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮,” Njenga reminds us. Let’s unite to protect the circular economy and ensure fair policies that prioritize sustainability over misinformation. • 🌍 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 - 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲 Every piece of clothing carries a story. From how it's made to what happens when we're done wearing it. Fabrics influence not just fashion, but the impacts the environment at every stage of their lifecycle. 🔍 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂: 🦶Different fabrics have different environmental footprints. Cotton, linen and wool require natural sources, while polyester comes from fossil fuels. 💧 The production process highly affects water use, emissions and waste. As well as the health of the workers due to working with high toxins. 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘁: ♻️ Recycling potential: Fabrics made from natural fibers are easier to recycle, while synthetic blends often end up in landfills. 👕 Reuse matters: Quality materials can be repurposed or donated, extending the life of garments and reducing the demand for new production. 🍂 Biodegradability: Some fabrics decompose naturally, while others can persist for decades. Fibers such as acrylics are non-degradable and should (preferably) be avoided. 🌱 By choosing better fabrics and participating in reuse and recycling, we help close the loop. Reducing waste and keeping valuable materials in circulation. 💡Let's rethink the lifecycle of fabrics - because what happens after we wear them matters just as much.
