Flocus™ is the trademark for kapok fibers.

Over ons

Flocus is an industry leader in sustainable kapok fiber production, driven by a vision to transform the textile supply chain through ethical practices, environmental responsibility, and superior quality. Founded with a mission to elevate kapok as a viable, eco-friendly fiber, Flocus has pioneered advanced processing techniques and social standards that set it apart from traditional suppliers. Our purpose is to deliver a product that benefits both people and the planet. We don’t produce fibers; rather, we harvest them from regenerative trees, cherishing each tree and ensuring no harm is done. Instead, we plant and cultivate these trees to renew the land, empower local communities, and support a sustainable future, working with nature’s perfect creation to make it available for everyone to enjoy.

Sara Cicognani🌍 writes from COP29 Azerbaijan for texfash.com: Redefine sustainability as regeneration. Rethink progress, not by how much we reduce emissions, but by how much we restore and regenerate. Regeneration isn’t just about restoring the land but also about empowering the people who live on it. Driving all of this for a real change requires a collaborative approach, reiterated the discussions, parleys at the 12-day COP29 at Baku that began 11 November and ends today. Did you know the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) can grow over 13 feet in a single year and reach heights of 160 feet? WOW! It grows throughout the neotropics and can be found from southern Mexico to the southern Amazon and also in West Africa and of course, Indonesia where Flocus is located. The term kapok actually refers to the seed fiber made by two different plant species Bombax ceiba L. (also known as red cotton tree) and Ceiba pentandra (L.). Flocus works primarily with Ceiba pentandra but is also exploring working with more kapok species diversity. The rapid growth of the kapok tree and its ability to produce copious seed pods contribute to its renewablity as a fiber. The fiber itself has many desirable characteristics like its cylindrical structure, filled with air pockets which makes it incredibly lightweight, water-resistant, and a great insulator—rivaling wool in thermal capabilities. Plus, it's soft as a cloud! Flocus has revolutionized kapok processing with a state-of-the-art facility in Indonesia. The team exports extremely fine kapok fiber worldwide and offers high grade materials to spinners and manufacturers. Traditionally kapok was used for stuffing mattresses and toys but now with the help of Flocus this wonder fiber is rediscovering multiple uses as a yarn, fabric, and insulation material. We here at ATW80Fabrics are simply enamoured with Flocus and their efforts to build a whole ecosystem of goodness around their kapok textiles. In fact, cofounder Sara Cicognani alongside Mr. Iwan Nazirwan founded an entire non-profit foundation to catalyze their pro-social efforts and it is quite literally and figuratively a very sweet story. Here's a recap of our recent interview with Sara. "Flocus's non-profit, KRAF, works closely with local apiculturists (bee-keepers) during the blooming season of their kapok trees. Since the trees are quite tall, the beekeepers have devised special methods to position the hives high enough to reach the flowers. The bees not only produce honey, which serves as a valuable source of income for the beekeepers, but they also enhance the pollination of the trees, making them more fruitful. [And that's not all!] Randu honey (Randu is the Indonesian name for kapok) is quite rare and considered a delicacy in the market. It also has natural anaesthetic properties, particularly in soothing sore throats. [So here is an additional benefit from creating kapok forests.] In addition to collaborating with beekeepers, Flocus also implements silvopasture practices, allowing animals to graze freely among the trees, naturally fertilizing the land with their nutritious poop. In some cases, they also gift a goat to local communities that accept our tree donations, and thereby provide them with an additional source of milk for children and natural fertilizer. We really love Flocus and their holistic forward-thinking work. Follow their work: Flocus #atw80fabrics #Kapok #plantbasedfabric #Flocus #NaturalFabrics #EcoFriendlyFashion

🌱 Kapok vs. Synthetic Fibers: The Ultimate Showdown! 💥 Flocus Kapok is rewriting the rules of sustainable fashion. How does it stack up against synthetic fibers like polyester? Let’s dive deeper: 🔹 Environmental Footprint: Unlike synthetics, which are derived from petrochemicals, kapok is a renewable resource that thrives without pesticides, irrigation, or synthetic fertilizers. Each kapok tree sequesters up to 20 times more carbon than an average tree, actively contributing to carbon capture. In contrast, producing 1 kg of polyester emits nearly 3 times the CO2 of kapok and releases microplastics into the environment with every wash, polluting oceans and waterways. 🔹 Biodegradability: Kapok is naturally biodegradable. When disposed of, it decomposes without leaving harmful residues. Polyester, on the other hand, can take over 200 years to degrade, releasing toxic substances into the soil and water. 🔹 Performance Metrics: Kapok’s hollow fibers make it incredibly light and insulating—ideal for products needing warmth without weight. It’s naturally resistant to moisture, making it hypoallergenic and odor-free. Polyester, while versatile, tends to trap heat and moisture, causing discomfort and bacterial growth. 🔹 Social & Ethical Impact: Flocus is leading the way in kapok industrialization by integrating Western standards into the kapok supply chain. Also by collaborating with KRAF - Kapok Regenerative Agriculture Forestry we collaborate with Indonesian farmers, we promote sustainable harvesting practices and create economic opportunities, fostering a community-focused approach. This stands in stark contrast to the often exploitative labor conditions found in synthetic textile production, showcasing a model of ethical production that prioritizes both people and the environment. Think about all of this when choosing products that align with your values. Kapok isn’t just another option—it’s an opportunity to make a real difference for yourself and the planet. Your choice can lead to a better future for fashion and the planet. Ready to be part of the kapok revolution? Your choice matters more than ever! #kapok #kapokfibers #kapoktextiles #kapokinnovation #Flocuskapok #EcoFashion #KapokPower #SustainableTextiles #Innovation #FlocusRevolution #BeyondPolyester Sources: World Economic Forum, Nature.org, and Global Forest Review.
