About us
Sway is a cleantech startup scaling seaweed-based, rapidly compostable replacements for plastic, beginning with flexible packaging. Our patented products match the vital performance attributes of conventional plastics and are designed to plug into existing infrastructure, enabling scale and competitive pricing. Unlike plastic, however, our materials are made from an abundant, regenerative resource and decompose into healthy soil after use. In 2023, Sway won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize. In 2021, Sway also won the Beyond the Bag Challenge sponsored by Closed Loop Partners and a consortium of major retailers. Sway’s solutions have garnered recognition from Vogue, Condé Nast, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Company. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and 1% for the Planet, Sway is working holistically to scale their product for a thriving, equitable future. Sway is headquartered in the California Bay Area. To learn more, visit swaythefuture.com.

2025 is the year not just for seaweed, but for all materials made with regenerative feedstocks to thrive 🧪✨ Mycelium, microalgae, shrimp shells, peas, wetland grasses, potato peels, coffee grounds, hay, organic waste and other materials found in nature are all viable sources for a new materials future! The solutions are here — radical collaboration will move ‘em forward. Thank you to Michael Long of A New Earth Project for dropping this question to round out our Coast Film & Music Festival panel alongside Emy Kane of Lonely Whale and Bruce Moore of Florence Marine X. It was an honor to share how working together has leveraged the seaweed movement — from catalyzing the scale of our work, to getting Sway packaging in global supply chains through innovative brands like Florence, to exciting folks about this magical resource through the new documentary #SeaweedStories! Our very own Julia Marsh was named a Leading Woman in Climate by Fin-Erth! A designer by trade, Julia co-founded Sway with design systems thinking: how can every piece of material created deliver positive benefits along the entire value chain? By ensuring Sway’s materials are scalable and compatible with existing manufacturing infrastructure, Julia has positioned Sway as a frontrunner in the $8.6B market for biodegradable flexible packaging. Her leadership has already garnered major wins, including 1st place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize powered Lonely Whale. A true visionary, materializing a plastic-free future 💙 Congratulations to the 101 incredible women recognized in this list, including Sian Sutherland of PlasticFree.com, Diana Verde Nieto of Positive Luxury, Jennifer Patrick of Patagonia, Joanne Rodriguez, LEED AP, FitWel Amb, CDT of Mycocycle, Inc., Margaret Henry of PepsiCo, and Sahar Mansoor of Bare Necessities Zero Waste Solutions . Happy new year from the Sway team! 🌊🌞🌈🌿 If last year was about growing up, 2025 is about seeing green lights everywhere. Everything is in motion. We’ve confirmed potent (to be announced) partnerships, our seaweed is already being harvested, processed and shipped, and production is actively happening as we write. This year, Sway has the potential to (finally!) create real change at scale. 2025 is also a year to demonstrate to the world what biomaterials can contribute to a thriving future. While the circular economy isn't a new concept, it's still unfamiliar to many. We believe that for seaweed materials to truly succeed, we need to champion all the nature based solutions – because to truly transform everything, we need everyone. Together with our incredible partners, we'll demonstrate how everyday materials can become vehicles for positive impact. Will it be easy? No. Perfect from the start? Unlikely. But we have the ingredients to build that thriving future: the team, the technology, the partnerships, the community, and the determination. By reading this message, you're already part of the journey. Thank you for being here. The world is our oyster, and we have a lot to look forward to. Onward to a future where materials can replenish the planet, from sea to soil! With gratitude and excitement, Julia Marsh & Matthew Mayes

One of Sway's biggest projects in 2024? Leveraging #sargassum into our product portfolio 🌊 You've likely seen sargassum — an invasive, equatorial seaweed species — making headlines for clogging beaches and disrupting tourism. But what if this "waste" could be transformed into a valuable resource? The Puerto Rico Studio, an innovation initiative led by Invest Puerto Rico and Newlab, supported our exploration of just that. Through the Puerto Rico Studio, Sway ran successful trials integrating Puerto Rico-sourced sargassum into TPSea™ resin, the base of our compostable, seaweed-based bioplastics! We look forward to further exploring this resource, with the goal of supporting global coastal communities, expanding the ecological impact of our seaweed sourcing strategy, and improving our product performance. Hear directly from our founders Julia Marsh and Matthew Mayes in this short film, created by Pan Up Productions 🌞🌿 For more info, visit https://lnkd.in/g9UQD3wP!
Rising ocean temperatures and nutrient pollution are fueling massive sargassum blooms in the Caribbean, disrupting coastlines, ecosystems, and local economies. To address this, Newlab and Invest Puerto Rico partnered to pilot technologies across the entire seaweed value chain. If implemented at scale, these solutions could transform how we view seaweed, turn it into useful products, and stimulate a completely new industry. The startups driving this transformation include: 🌊 SOS Carbon: Empowers local fishing communities to harvest sargassum with retrofitted boats, collecting over 70 tons daily for processing into sustainable products like agricultural bio-stimulants. 🍃 Sway: Turns sargassum into compostable bioplastics for commercial packaging. 🔬 Thalasso AS: Processes sargassum into valuable compounds with portable bio-refineries. 👕 PANGAIA: Creates sustainable textiles from sargassum. This initiative is more than a regional solution—it’s a blueprint for how waste can be reimagined as a commercial resource. By leveraging startup technologies and creating a new value chain, Puerto Rico is setting an example for the Caribbean and beyond, demonstrating how environmental challenges can drive meaningful, scalable change. 🎥 Learn more about the startups and commercialization projects in the video below.

A *massive* win for seaweed innovation! With new support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s MACRO program, Bay Area-based seaweed innovators Sway and Umaro Foods are joining forces to optimize sidestream alginate into superior, scalable, and cost-effective bioplastics 🎉 Umaro unlocks new ways to extract seaweed proteins and transform them into high quality products — like their delicious, plant-based bacon. With the right chemistry, seaweed can provide not just protein, but also polysaccharides for bioplastics 🧪 Through this new funding, we will collaborate to upgrade Umaro’s surplus alginate (a brown seaweed polysaccharide) into a highly optimized ingredient for Sway products — all while harnessing the most use out of every piece of kelp. “Through diligent research and development, Sway plans to increase the accessibility of our seaweed-based materials by utilizing Umaro’s surplus alginate to lower our overall price point,” says Julia Marsh, CEO and co-founder of Sway. “Thanks to the support of the DOE, we also plan to enhance our material’s performance to tackle especially challenging categories of necessary packaging for fashion, home goods, and food – helping to avoid plastic pollution in the process!” To learn more about this collaboration, visit https://lnkd.in/gP3RUSHz 🌊 Special thanks to Dr. Mitra Ganewatta, Ph.D. and Dr. Amanda Stiles for propelling this project forward!
