Yesterday was National Youth Day in India!🌟 Each 12 January, India celebrates National Youth Day, this year’s theme is “Youth Empowerment for Nation Building.” The irony is glaring: while the government promotes this message, it silences and criminalizes young leaders who fight for democratic values 🚨 Meet some of India’s courageous young voices who have been punished for striving for justice: 🔥 Suneeta Pottam: 25-year-old #Adivasi (#Indigenous) activist who has campaigned for years against violence and exploitation in #Chhattisgarh. Suneeta’s peaceful protests against extrajudicial killings and corporate land grabs have made her a target of state harassment. She has been in custody since July 2024, accused of baseless crimes and labelled a threat for defending her community’s constitutional rights. ✊ Gulfisha Fatima: #Muslim student leader arrested in 2020 at the age of 26 for peacefully protesting the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act (#CAA). Gulfisha has faced years of unjust imprisonment under oppressive anti-terror laws, targeted simply for demanding religious equality and harmony. 📣 Asif Iqbal Tanha: Another young Muslim #activist who protested against the marginalization of minorities. Arrested in 2020, at only 24 years old, he was falsely accused of inciting violence and detained under harsh charges, spending over a year in jail before being granted bail. These young leaders fearlessly fight for truth and justice. Yet, instead of empowering them, the state has labelled them threats, silencing the very voices working to create a more equitable India. National Youth Day should inspire action, not just words. Empowerment isn’t about slogans—it’s about creating a society where young people can demand justice, equality, and accountability without fear of persecution. This National Youth Day, The London Story stands in solidarity with these brave young leaders and demands that their voices be amplified, not silenced. #NationalYouthDay #YouthEmpowerment #Justice #HumanRights #India 🌟

Our new op-ed is live! 📰 ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eap9f6rN The European Commission confirmed that the EU-India Human Rights Dialogue will take place on 8 January 2025, after the Indian Government cancelled the original August dialogue. As both the European Union and India work to expand their trade and digital partnerships, it is essential that critical #humanrights issues are front and centre in these discussions. The two should ensure that their relationship is centred on shared values of #democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and the right to privacy. The dialogue must address the following urgent concerns: 1. The #Manipur Conflict- The Indian government’s failure to end the ongoing conflict in Manipur and end the use of #internetshutdowns and #curfews should be central to discussions. This would follow the 2023 European Parliament Urgency Resolution. #universalAccountability on #universalHumanRights 2. The fate of Human Rights Defenders: There is a continued repression of human rights defenders, students, #activists and dissenters in India and several EU states. The use of the draconian anti-terror laws against these groups must be discussed and condemned. 3. Freedom of Speech and the protection of #Journalists: The suppression of freedom of expression and the increasing harassment of journalists can not be ignored; they threaten the health of a democracy. India’s ranking of 159/180 and Hungary’s ranking of 67/180 on the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index are stark reminders that press freedom is under serious threat in India and the EU. 4. Radical #HateSpeech: The rise of radical hate speech in both India and the EU is deeply concerning. Both must discuss how radical, #xenophobic hate speech is being used to polarise society and leads to rampant, unabated violence against minorities. 5. Religious Freedom and Minority Rights: Discriminatory legislation, such as India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (#CAA), and violence against #ReligiousMinorities must be tackled. Both must uphold the rights of minorities in law and in practice, and India must stop granting impunity to militia groups who commit atrocities against religious minorities. 6. Privacy and Data Rights: The Indian government links data protection with national security, not the right to privacy. The European Parliament Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) visits India in January. Given that India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act is not GDPR adequate, the Committee and Commission must not violate EU citizens’ privacy rights to establish a Digital Partnership with India. Human rights cannot be sidelined for the sake of strategic interests! The EU-India partnership must be rooted in a shared commitment to human dignity, freedom, and justice. #EUIndia #Accountability #FreedomOfSpeech #MinorityRights #Women'sRights #EndHateSpeech
