  • This week, the updated PEFCR Feed was published. The light review took place in 2024 to extend the validity of the documentation until December 31, 2025.    The EU PEFCR Feed and the GFLI database are complementary, in that the PEFCR Feed is one of the four globally recognized reference documents that underpin the GFLI methodology, and it lists the GFLI database as the recommended alternative source of secondary datasets when an EF-compliant dataset is not available from the European Commission’s EF 3.1 nodes or other allowed sources.    Alignment of the GFLI methodology with the PEFCR Feed is therefore crucial for companies selling products in the EU market, thereby allowing feed companies to continue to improve and document the environmental performance of their compound feed production following the most updated PEF-compliant guidance.   Read the full post below or check out the updated PEFCR Feed right away here: https://lnkd.in/eqKAeHJT

Updated PEFCR Feed for Food-Producing Animals published On 19 February 2025, the updated Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) of Feed for Food-Producing Animals was published on the FEFAC website. The ‘PEFCR Feed’ holds the methodology and rules for how to calculate the environmental footprint of compound feed. The update was primarily of technical nature, without significant changes to the methodology itself. The updated PEFCR Feed, which will also be made available on the European Commission’s Environmental Footprint Methods webpage, is valid until 31 December 2025, by which time more clarity will be given as regards when a more substantial ‘full review’ is due. With help of input during the technical update procedure, FEFAC has already started with an inventory of possible improvements and welcomes further suggestions from experts in the coming years. FEFAC President Pedro Cordero: “The technical update of the PEFCR Feed was a formal necessity, but the restored validity is nonetheless of great importance. It reinforces FEFAC’s commitment to facilitating companies to move ahead with communicating the environmental performance of compound feed production, with the recently endorsed Green Feed Labelling Code and the GFLI Database as two other key pillars”. FEFAC thanks the other participants in the PEFCR Feed Technical Secretariat, the review panel and the consultants from Mérieux NutriScience | Blonk for their contributions and essential guidance to completing the process. Soon also the newly developed PEFCR Marine Fish will be published, where FEFAC took part in the Technical Secretariat. With the PEFCR Marine Fish and the PEFCR Dairy there are will now be two categories of animal products with a published methodological framework for environmental footprinting endorsed by the European Community. https://lnkd.in/eGvQB-f7

  • One of the European feed associations has taken the efforts to looking into the different tools out there dealing with environmental footprints. Through these tools they're providing their members with a standard to measure and report. ‘𝘽𝙁𝘼 - 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙜𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙 (𝙇𝘾𝘼) 𝙫𝙞𝙖 𝙀𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙋𝙀𝙁𝘾𝙍 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙁𝙇𝙄 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚. • Reflecting on an inspiring 2024 🌍   As we have stepped into 2025, we also take a moment to look back on a year filled with milestones for the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI).   One key highlight was the launch of our first physical and online brochure, a resource utilized during the 8 events where GFLI or its members were present. We also moderated two impactful panel discussions about alignment in the full supply chain.   On the technical front, we updated our methodology to allow grass-based ingredients into the database and had a minor database update. A new strategic plan was created to align with the developments LCA and sustainability happening in the supply chain to meet the industry’s evolving needs, as well as laying the groundwork for future developments, including emission models, IT frameworks, and by-law amendments, to be implemented in 2025 and 2026.   This was made possible by the huge growth the GFLI membership has experienced. 16 members have joined in 2024 alone, which is the largest growth since its foundation in 2019! We’ll share more details on all these updates during our upcoming annual membership meeting.   A special thanks the 350 new LinkedIn followers who joined us last year. Here’s to an impactful and innovative 2025! Do you want to join our journey this coming year as well? Follow our LinkedIn page.

3/8 🐟 The #sustainability of marine ingredients in aquaculture feeds has been a focus of various #metrics. None of them allows for the assessment of “trade-offs” and the passing of risk from one resource to another. They all focus on marine ingredients without recognising that replacing these ingredients with an alternative does not necessarily improve sustainability, reduce risk, or even change the global impact on fisheries. In a recently published review, the background behind each of these metrics, aspects of their origins, and each of their short comings was examined 👉 https://lnkd.in/dpa3gZhR Brett Glencross Dave Robb Richard Newton Enrico Bachis, PHD #lca Global Feed LCA Institute

  • The first-ever Corn Sustainability Strategy Session by the NCGA & USGC   On behalf of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and the U.S. Grains Council (USGC), GFLI was cordially invited to participate as a speaker in this invitation-only event for their members.    As part of a broader discussion on sustainability and agri-food system requirements and the U.S. corn industry’s strategy, Laura Nobel spoke about the efforts of GFLI and examples of how other sectors and users interact with GFLI. Nearly 60 representatives from state-level growers associations, members of the USGC, NCGA, sustainability experts, and grower leaders discussed how to move this ahead as the topic gains more interest in the US and their exporting countries.    A key takeaway is the farmers’ willingness to meet demand from downstream partners when the complexities of their regionalized practices are understood. Localized sustainability can look differently across states. Special attention was given to the USGC Corn Sustainability Assurance protocol (CSAP): https://lnkd.in/eZtP2HrG, where the value of an aligned international and national approach may simplify the reporting duties of the growers. #GFLI #Invited #Presentation #Speaker #Sustainability #Strategy
