Over ons

The Institute of Data Science aims to tackle impactful research problems through multidisciplinary teams involving students, researchers, partners, and stakeholders inside and out of the university. We aim to train the next generation of data scientists to be even more collaborative and interdisciplinary. Research at IDS focuses on: 1. Accelerating scientific discovery through powerful platforms for scalable, collaborative and reproducible discovery science 2. Improving clinical care and wellbeing by developing a learning health system to understand the health of diverse populations and to maximise the wellness and health outcomes for individuals. 3. Empowering communities so that they can learn what works, what doesn’t, and how to enact change to improve the quality of life for themselves and their neighbours. IDS is part of the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS).

🌿 Exciting news from Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering! In our BSc Circular Engineering program, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. But how can we bring that same focus to core mathematics courses like calculus? That’s the challenge I took on together with program director Gavin Phillips after receiving a sustainability grant. Together with my brilliant student assistant, Leoni H., we’re integrating sustainability topics into CEN1002 Calculus, making it more relevant and impactful for our students. 🚀 Here’s what we’ve been working on: 🌍 Embedding real-world sustainability examples into lectures, such as optimizing solar panel efficiency and minimizing packaging materials, directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🤝 Designing a team assignment where students tackle sustainability problems from their hometowns using calculus. This not only boosts engagement but also fosters ownership and collaboration. And we’re not stopping there! 🎥 Leoni and I are putting the finishing touches on a dissemination video, “Making Calculus Sustainable!?” to showcase the outcomes of this co-creation journey. Plus, we’re co-authoring a practice paper for the SEFI Annual Meeting on Engineering Education, where we’ll share insights on co-creation, design, and the impact on students through surveys and focus groups. This project nicely demonstrates the power of collaboration between students and staff to shape meaningful and engaging course content. Stay tuned for the video release and our findings! #sustainability #education #calculus #cocreation #engineering

I am proud of Dr. Amrapali Zaveri, Data Scientist! International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated on February 11 to recognise women and girls' significant achievements and contributions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This day marks the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls worldwide, celebrating their successful leadership in science and technology. Despite various efforts, there is still a considerable gender imbalance in the field of science and technology on a global scale. https://lnkd.in/eiCyUCp With Anna Schueth, Lianne Ippel, Ricardo Pietrobon, Kody Moodley Maastricht University Institute of Data Science
