✈️ Last week, ILX had the honour of attending the Sustainable Finance Mission from the Netherlands in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the Embassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the United Arab Emirates. It is great to see an increased ambition towards green and climate finance in the country, demonstrated by the its post-COP28 commitment to launch ALTÉRRA. This initiative focuses on mobilising private capital for the energy transition in emerging markets, which closely aligns with ILX's own efforts to mobilise this capital for emerging markets, aiming to close the Climate and SDG funding gap. 🤝 Thank you for all the work and invitation, and looking forward to more collaborations and conversations that will ensure a more sustainable future!
This week, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UAE in Abu Dhabi hosted a Sustainable Finance Mission from the Netherlands. The UAE has the great ambition to become a global finance leader, driven by Abu Dhabi’s vision to become the ‘’capital of capital’.’ As part of this vision, the UAE is also positioning itself as a global leader in green finance. During COP28, this commitment was reinforced with the launch of ALTERRA, a groundbreaking $30 billion fund—the world’s largest public fund for sustainable finance—designed to meet the urgent demand for climate investments in emerging markets and developing economies. With its strong financial sector and progressive approach to sustainable and developmental investments, the Netherlands is well-positioned to contribute to the global transition towards green finance. Given our expertise in financing project pipelines in the Global South, there are exciting opportunities for Dutch-Emirati collaboration in this field. As part of the Sustainable Finance Mission, we had the privilege of engaging with key stakeholders in Abu Dhabi: 📍Monday, 17 February Ambassador H.E. Gerard Steeghs welcomed the Dutch delegation at the Netherlands Embassy, followed by an insightful session at ADGM on Abu Dhabi’s (sustainable) finance ecosystem and the UAE’s ambition to become a global green finance leader. The day concluded with a Round Table at the Ambassador’s Residence, where the delegation met with leading Abu Dhabi financial institutions, including Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), ADQ, Mubadala, and Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC), followed by a networking session. 📍Tuesday, 18 February A key highlight was our visit to ALTÉRRA, where we learned about its vision to mobilize private capital and accelerate the energy transition in the Global South. This was followed by B2B meetings. In the evening, the delegation had the opportunity to meet the Secretary General of the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, Christiaan Rebergen. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this mission a success! 🙌 FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, ILX, TCX, Invest International, Climate Fund Managers (CFM), Atradius, Rabobank, ING. Your enthusiasm and expertise made this a truly impactful experience. The Embassy is looking forward to building on these connections. 📽️ Yesterday, ILX's CIO, Elvira Eurlings, participated in the Center for Global Development online event "Can MDBs/DFIs Really Build Markets?: A Deep Dive into Investing for Impact at the Market Level", alongside Chris Eleftheriades, Executive Director, Lion's Head Global Partners, Alessandro Maffioli, Managing Director for Development Effectiveness, IDB Invest, William Perraudin, Managing Director, Risk Control Limited, Maria Smith, Chief Impact Officer, British International Investment, moderated by Nancy Lee, Director for Sustainable Development Finance, Center for Global Development. The discussion centered on how Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) can strategically select investments that not only yield market equivalent returns but also foster broader market development. Elvira shared insights on ILX's approach to co-investing with MDBs and DFIs to mobilise private capital for emerging markets, as well as highlighting: 1️⃣ Investors increasingly require SDG and impact reporting 2️⃣ Working with MDBs and DFIs allow for innovation and replicability that increases the creation of new markets 3️⃣ MDBs and DFIs should have a continued focus on bringing the private sector where possible, without relying on concessional or blended capital where not absolutely necessary 4️⃣ Transparency is essential for the private sector to become familiar with the development finance asset class Learn more and find the full discussion: https://lnkd.in/dXcyqqHe

📰 Pension funds have the potential to bridge the financing gap for the SDGs, while perceived risks and lack of local expertise often hinder investments. Initiatives like ILX are paving the way by co-investing alongside Multilateral Development Banks and Development Finance Institutions, offering scalable, risk-adjusted opportunities. Read more in the below article in ECDPM 🌍:
📣 Emerging markets are $4.2 trillion a year short of meeting sustainable development and climate goals. Multilateral development banks and development finance institutions are well equipped to address this gap. Emerging markets offer unique opportunities for growth, portfolio diversification and contributions to closing the development financing gap, yet several barriers continue to prevent the flow of this much-needed capital.
