The Future of Risk Management: Lessons from California’s Insurance Crisis As California grapples with devastating wildfires and an evolving insurance crisis, parallels emerge that resonate far beyond natural disasters. A POLITICO article highlights the challenges insurers face when managing unpredictable, high-severity risks—challenges eerily similar to those in the rapidly evolving world of cybersecurity. Just as wildfires have forced insurers to reassess risk models and coverage strategies, the surge in sophisticated cyberattacks is pushing the boundaries of traditional cyber insurance. Businesses are left navigating coverage gaps, rising premiums, and exclusions that reflect the growing uncertainty in underwriting these modern risks. This isn’t just a California problem—it’s a global wake-up call. The insurance industry must adapt to a world where prevention and mitigation are as crucial as post-event recovery. For cybersecurity, this means integrating proactive risk assessments, employee training, and advanced threat detection into insurance offerings. Just as communities are exploring “fireproofing” strategies, organizations must embrace “cyberproofing” as a standard business practice. This is also the core message of the article we shared earlier this week by Marsh At Insiber.com, we believe the future of cyber insurance lies in partnerships that merge robust cyber risk management tools with innovative insurance solutions. It’s time to shift the focus from simply insuring against catastrophic losses to preventing them in the first place. What do you think? Are we prepared for the challenges of insuring the unpredictable in a digital-first world? Reimagining the Future of Insurance Distribution: Embedded Cyber Insurance & Risk Advisory Evolution The insurance industry stands at a transformative crossroads. According to a groundbreaking report co-developed by Roland Berger and Insiber.com alma mater, InsurTech Hub Munich, the future lies in embedded insurance and a shift in broker roles towards becoming risk advisors, not just policy salespeople. Key highlights from the report: Embedded Insurance: Seamlessly integrating insurance with primary products is poised to redefine customer journeys. This model offers scalable opportunities, especially in areas like cyber protection, while addressing evolving consumer preferences. Risk Advisory Evolution: Brokers who embrace advanced analytics and AI will transition into trusted advisors, helping clients proactively manage risks rather than reactively insuring against them. Tech-Driven Insights: Digital transformation, including AI and data analytics, will be pivotal in reshaping customer engagement and boosting operational efficiency. For cyber insurance, this means embedding coverage within broader cybersecurity ecosystems—turning policies into dynamic, proactive partnerships. This shift allows insurers and brokers to offer tailored, transparent, and easily accessible solutions, meeting the expectations of a hybrid, tech-savvy clientele. The challenge? Balancing the scalability of embedded models with maintaining strong customer relationships. The opportunity? Driving unparalleled value by uniting insurance with ecosystem-wide solutions. A huge thanks to Florian Graillot of astoryaVC for sharing this report in his new year's message and InsurTech Hub Munich and Roland Berger for leading this forward-thinking initiative and sharing such invaluable insights. At Insiber.com, we’re inspired to play our part in shaping this future—where insurers and brokers not only protect but also empower their clients. The cyber insurance market is set for remarkable expansion, driven by the rise in cyber threats and the growing need for effective risk management. Industry forecasts suggest rapid growth in premiums as demand for comprehensive cyber coverage accelerates. Global cyber insurance premiums are expected to reach $20 billion by 2025 and $29 billion by 2027, according to Cyrus Delarami, underwriting manager for corporate cyber at Munich Re. This represents a significant leap from the estimated $14 billion market size in 2023, signaling the sector’s evolution from a niche offering to a vital pillar of corporate risk management. Growth could come from increased penetration among small and medium-sized enterprises, said Michael Phillips, New York-based U.S. cyber practice leader, at specialist insurer CFC GROUP Ltd. The recent problems of COGITANDA Deutschland, a German cyber Managing General Agent, highlight the sector’s complexities. The company’s financial struggles reflect the volatility of a fast-changing market, but they also underline the need for more potent, more adaptive underwriting approaches. These challenges allow insurers to innovate, offering more sophisticated, tailored policies that align with the changing threat landscape. Enhanced products and better risk assessment tools will be crucial for future growth. Despite hurdles, the broader outlook for cyber insurance remains one of expansion. The increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks call for more substantial insurance offerings and more proactive risk management by businesses, setting the stage for a more secure and well-insured digital economy.

Cogitanda on the Brink of Insolvency: A Cautionary Tale in Cyber Underwriting COGITANDA Deutschland, once a promising provider of cyber risk coverage and incident recovery services, now finds itself in dire straits. Years of substantial underwriting losses, compounded by stringent demands from risk carriers for higher premiums and curtailed coverage, have spurred brokers to take their business elsewhere. The company’s shareholder letter laments an “exceptionally sharp decline in commission income,” a setback that has weighed heavily on the bottom line. Market timing has only deepened the crisis. With many policies renewing at the start of the year, the exodus of clients in the autumn left Cogitanda grappling with an unexpectedly acute short-term strain. In short, the once-thriving cyber player is now grappling with the unforgiving realities of a volatile insurance market. This turmoil underscores the importance of clients—particularly SMEs—actively managing their cyber risks rather than relying predominantly on third parties. Proactive measures and informed decision-making on the client side can help stabilize insurer-client relationships. To that end, Insiber.com has successfully created the CyberControl platform, designed to effectively support companies in managing their cyber risks and insurance needs and avoid heavy insurance losses for insurers. For further insights into the COGITANDA Deutschland case, insolvency and insurance law experts Dr. Wolfram Desch and Quirin Vergho of GvW Graf von Westphalen—moderated by Ole Sieverding of CyberDirekt—recently discussed these issues in detail.
