International Film Festival Rotterdam

RTM Day is about more than showcasing Rotterdam’s latest film productions. It also serves as a meeting ground for strengthening connections between filmmakers, industry stakeholders, and institutions across the Zuid-Holland region. This year we teamed up with Film Platform Rotterdam, to welcome 23 film professionals representing talent development initiatives, cinemas, festivals, and municipalities from Rotterdam and The Hague. This gathering was not just about introductions—it was the first step towards forming a structured regional hub. By pooling resources, knowledge, and opportunities, this initiative can drive long-term collaboration in talent development, production funding, and expanding regional networks. The morning sessions focused on identifying the unique strengths and complementary aspects of each city’s film culture while generating concrete ideas on how to support each other. This aligns with IFFR’s broader industry vision: to create sustainable pathways for filmmakers at every stage of their careers, whether through co-production, exhibition, or professional development. Een inspirerende ochtend vol film, creativiteit en samenwerking beleefd tijdens werkbezoek van ons directieteam bij het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). Een unieke kans om te zien hoe film als krachtig medium kan bijdragen aan maatschappelijke verbinding, reflectie en innovatie. Onze ochtend begon bij Rotterdam Centraal Station, waar we de indrukwekkende installatie Happy New Year van Jinjoon Lee FRSA ervaarden. Bijzonder was dat Jinjoon zelf aanwezig was en ons persoonlijk meenam in de gedachtegang achter zijn werk. Zijn kunst confronteerde ons met de spanning tussen vreugde en realiteit en zette aan tot reflectie op de wereld om ons heen. Daarna volgde een boeiend gesprek met Clare Stewart en Marten Rabarts over Pulling Focus: NL 2025, waarin Nederlands filmtalent en de wereldwijde impact van onze filmindustrie centraal staan. Dit programma biedt kansen voor samenwerking en talentontwikkeling op internationaal niveau. Tot slot woonden we de sessie Probably the Best Co-Producers in the World? bij, met een inspirerend panel bestaande uit Jacobine van der Vloed, Erik Glijnis, Denis Vaslin, Stienette Bosklopper en ineke smits. Een waardevolle discussie over de kracht van internationale coproducties en de toekomst van filmproductie. Dank aan Barbara de Heer (she/her) en Luka de Ruijter vanuit IFFR voor de gastvrijheid en inzichten. En natuurlijk een speciale dank aan onze collega’s Saskia Kagchel, Martijn van der Mark en Danielle Paulssen voor het organiseren. Film verbindt, vertelt verhalen en laat ons met een nieuwe blik naar de wereld kijken. Cate Blanchett and IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund launch the Displacement Film Fund Cate Blanchett, actor, producer and global Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, together with IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund today announced the Displacement Film Fund – a new short film grant scheme which will champion and fund the work of displaced filmmakers, or filmmakers with a proven track record in creating authentic storytelling on the experiences of displaced people. The pilot scheme, which will offer five individual production grants of €100,000, is announced with support from Master Mind, UNIQLO, Droom en Daad, the Tamer Family Foundation and The Amahoro Coalition as Founding Partners, the HBF as Management Partner and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency as Strategic Partner. Blanchett will appear on a panel during IFFR 2025 on Saturday 1 February at 15.30 with Koji Yanai, Waad Al-Kateab, Jonas Rasmussen and Head of the HBF, Tamara Tatishvili, moderated by Uzma Hasan, to discuss the scheme’s origins, aims and the urgency of its focus.
