Researchers from the Human Movement Sciences Department (Maastricht University) have utilized the Omnical Indirect Calorimeter by Maastricht Instruments in a groundbreaking study to investigate running economy. This study, published on March 21, 2024, used advanced metabolic analysis to reveal key differences in running technique that affect energy efficiency. The findings demonstrate how precise measurements of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, provided by the Omnical Indirect Calorimeter, can distinguish between runners with better and poorer running economy. Recent research reveals significant differences in nocturnal substrate oxidation between young, healthy individuals and older, overweight populations, including those with type 2 diabetes.
