New Acquisition in Our Special Collections! ✨ We’re excited to announce a remarkable addition to the Charles Eyck collection at Maastricht University Library: a 1945 portrait of Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich, created during her visit to Maastricht shortly after its liberation. This discovery wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of Jim Pepels, an archaeology enthusiast with a passion for uncovering historical gems. Over ten years ago, Jim came across a similar sketch of Dietrich in an online auction. His research led him to the Maastricht University Special Collections, which already housed another sketch and a photograph of what appears to be a painting of Dietrich, created by Charles Eyck during the same period. This new acquisition deepens the story of Dietrich’s connection to Maastricht and Charles Eyck’s artistic legacy. It also highlights the Special Collections' role in preserving Limburg's cultural heritage, offering unique insights into history through art, correspondence, and personal artifacts. We’re proud to share these treasures and ensure their preservation for generations to come.
