Partner in the picture! 🎥 To enhance the participatory process, we interview North Sea Energy (NSE) participants and stakeholders to share their perspectives on the North Sea's role in the energy transition. Today, we speak with Mariken Betsema and George Wurpel from MSG Sustainable Strategies. As an energy and climate consultancy, MSG is fully engaged in the energy transition. What is your role in it? Mariken: "At MSG, we focus on both offshore and onshore challenges in the energy transition. Offshore, in programs like NSE, we lead stakeholder engagement and plan the future development of the North Sea for clean energy production. For over 15 years, we’ve been working on offshore transitions, starting with a project on repurposing platform jackets for ecological purposes—a concept still relevant today." George: "Onshore, we support municipalities, regions, and government agencies in sustainable heating transitions. The challenge here is to ensure participation from all stakeholders, as the energy transition only works if everyone is on board." MSG’s mission is to accelerate the energy transition. How does your approach work? George: "Our strategy is mainly based on three pillars: Participation: Ensuring all stakeholders are actively involved, whether they’re focused on local or offshore energy projects. Cooperation: Building partnerships with NGOs, research institutes, businesses, and communities to align interests and foster support for energy solutions. Communication: Translating complex issues into clear, actionable insights to improve decision-making and public understanding." Mariken: "Visualizing outcomes is central to our approach. Whether it’s infographics, white papers or ecological designs, visual tools help stakeholders reach agreements more efficiently. Our goal is to create not only technically sound plans but also solutions that are widely supported and provide actionable steps. We combine stakeholder insights to deliver practical outcomes, such as human capital agendas, ecological energy hub designs, or clear visuals like infographics. Visualizing concepts, both onshore and offshore, fosters better discussions and faster agreements. Our approach ensures plans are technically sound, widely supported, and actionable." You work on several work packages within NSE. Can you share some highlights? Mariken: Within NSE, MSG is involved in key areas such as: Stakeholder engagement: We design ways to involve North Sea users—energy companies, fishermen, and environmental groups—ensuring all interests are considered. Human capital agenda: Addressing workforce challenges to ensure we have the skills needed for the offshore energy transition. Ecology and nature: Promoting nature-inclusive designs that balance energy production with environmental preservation. Yesterday morning, the work package leaders of the North Sea Energy program came together to align their progress and study results so far. Integration is a key element within NSE, making these regular meetings essential for the course of the research program. In the coming months, the focus will be on finalising the research and bringing all findings together into one integrated story: The North Sea Energy Roadmap. The North Sea Energy Roadmap provides a holistic overview of the North Sea, designed to guide the integration and development of a climate-neutral energy system in the North Sea by 2050. It consolidates findings from the North Sea Energy program and provides critical information for policymakers, project developers, and stakeholders. Yesterday, during the Offshore Energy Conference at the RAI in Amsterdam, we had the pleasure of hosting a side event: 'Integrated Energy Infrastructure Planning for the North Sea.' This workshop, led by Joris Koornneef, brought together international experts, policymakers, and industry to discuss how we can collaboratively shape the future of the North Sea as a hub for integrated energy solutions. Highlights included: 📢 Pit Losch, PhD (North Seas Energy Cooperation) on joint activities in electricity, hydrogen, and CO₂ of its members: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and the European Commission. 📢 Rob van Zoelen (New Energy Coalition) explained why the North Sea is so important for the European Energy Transition and emphasized the need for an international vision for integrated offshore grids. 📢 Michel Dubbelboer (TenneT) discussed the electricity perspective in the long term (2040-2050) and emphasized "the need for speed" on generation and transmission for the whole of Europe if we want to meet the goals, what this means for infrastructure and the 400 bn euro investment that is needed by 2050. 📢 Robert Evers (Gasunie) gave us the hydrogen perspective. He shared plans for hydrogen networks linking Europe through reuse and innovation. 📢 Annemiek Asschert (EBN) provided in-depth information the possibilities for storing H2 and CO2 offshore. She showed how many platforms, wells and pipelines there are in the Dutch part of the North Sea and what is needed to use these for storage. 📢 Pim Somers (Stichting De Noordzee) reminded us of nature’s foundational role in human activity. His main messages: We cannot manage nature, but we can manage human activities and nature is our ally, and it is the basis for all our human activities. 📢 Robert Seehawer (AquaVentus) presented four options to integrate 14 GW of far out offshore wind farms into the energy system and the need for a mix of molecules and electrons.
