“We poured water and said 'Su gibi git, su gibi gel' as a farewell to the carpet, which means 'go as water, come back as water'. And we may happily conclude today that it was not in vain, as the carpet has come back to its home, the Peace Palace”, stated Piet Hein Donner, president of the Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace, during a solemn ceremony to celebrate the return of the Turkish Hereke Carpet. He explained: “A gift to the Peace Palace, is not a contribution to a collection of art and mementos. It signified and still signifies a dedication and commitment to the ideal for which the Peace Palace stands: peace through justice and the rule of law.” H.E. Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, declared: “Crafting such carpets is an art that requires the highest level of craftsmanship and effort. It demands a significant share of your most valuable treasure - your time - which adds value to it. This is why we describe endeavours requiring long-term effort, dedication, and sacrifice with the expression 'woven knot by knot', inspired by our carpets and kilims. When you observe the Hereke Carpet with this understanding, you will see that it narrates, through its motifs and colours, the care and effort invested in the relations built with the Netherlands. More than 40 countries contributed to the construction of the Peace Palace by donating works of art or building materials. The largest hand-woven carpet outside Türkiye was donated by the Ottoman Empire in 1911 and has now been extensively restored at its place of origin, combining science and traditional craftsmanship. After an absence of nearly two years, the 160-square-meter carpet officially returns to the Peace Palace today. During a solemn ceremony and in the presence of members of the corps diplomqtique, H.E. Selçuk Ünal, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Netherlands, and H.E. Humanity towards each other. [...] We will never lose sight of what we aim to protect: a free democracy, international rule of law, the sovereignty of states” explained General Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defence. On 26 November 2024, the Netherlands Armed Forces received the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize, the second oldest peace prize in the world. This honor was awarded to the Netherlands Royal Navy, Royal Army, Royal Air Force, and the Royal Marechaussee for their involvement in more than 80 peace missions worldwide. This honor was awarded to the Netherlands Royal Navy, Royal Army, Royal Air Force, and the Marechaussee for their involvement in more than 80 peace missions worldwide.
