Over ons

Today, the Netherlands Armed Forces received the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize, the second oldest peace prize in the world. This honor was awarded to the Netherlands Royal Navy, Royal Army, Royal Air Force, and the Marechaussee for their involvement in more than 80 peace missions worldwide. "Seeing the darkness of war helped me to appreciate the light even more. Peace. Freedom. Democracy. Rule of law. Humanity towards each other. We will never lose sight of what we aim to protect: a free democracy, international rule of law, the sovereignty of states. We will continue to participate in missions that seek to safeguard and promote these values", said Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defense. “A carillon cannot prevent wars, but the music of this extraordinary instrument can bring a smile to people's faces and connect people, in peaceful as well as in troubled times.” This was stated yesterday by Heleen van der Weel, player of the carillon of the Peace Palace, during a festive celebration in honor of the 30th anniversary of the carillon and Heleen von der Weel's more than 30 years of service. The Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize, the second oldest Peace Prize in the world, will be awarded to the Netherlands Armed Forces on 26 November 2024 at the Peace Palace. The Dutch Royal Navy, Royal Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marechaussee are receiving this honor for their involvement in more than 80 peacekeeping missions worldwide. "The Netherlands Armed Forces contribute to global stability and peace in various ways, combining both military and humanitarian efforts," states the jury of the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize. The jury report clarifies: "Long before the United Nations and UN peacekeeping missions existed, the Netherlands carried out their first peacekeeping mission in 1913 in Albania. In that same year the Peace Palace opened. This shows that, more than a hundred years ago, people had already realized that peacebuilding has many dimensions. [...] With this prize, we would like to thank all Dutch military personnel, who daily push their own boundaries to protect the borders of others. Members of the Netherlands Armed Forces dedicate their lives to preserving or building democracy and peace worldwide.” https://lnkd.in/e-FHbV6d Ministerie van Defensie #PeacePrize #Peacebuilding #thehague #peacepalace #peacekeeping Onno Eichelsheim

Today, 117 years ago, the Second Peace Conference concluded, which was held in The Hague from 15 June to 18 October 1907. During the conference, on 30 June 1907, the first stone of the Peace Palace was laid during a solemn ceremony. Shortly after the final conference, at which 12 treaties and a declaration were ratified, construction of the Peace Palace began. The building process was captured in high-quality images by photographer C.J. de Gilde, and the majority of the glass negatives have been preserved in the Peace Palace. https://lnkd.in/ex24EzAW #intlaw #internationallaw #thehague #todayinhistory #PeacePalace #PeaceBuilding #PeacethroughLaw #PeaceConference

There is a clear correlation between climate change and peace, or, in other words, there is a link between global warming and the causes of conflict. A new exhibition in the Visitors Centre of the Peace Palace currently demonstrates the consequences of climate change and its direct link to the emergence of conflict. The exhibition consists of two main components: a video featuring interviews with individuals from climate-vulnerable regions and an interactive scale allowing visitors to visualize climate inequality, illustrating nations’ contributions to CO2 emissions and their vulnerability to climate change. The exhibition was jointly planned and realized by the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, the winner of the 2023 Youth Carnegie Peace Prize World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) and Interactive Media Foundation. Today is the International Day of Peace. Besides, this year marks exactly 125 years since the First Hague Peace Conference. That is why 125 children have written down their peace wishes for the future and deposited them in a time capsule. The Mayor of The Hague, Jan van Zanen, the Mayor of Madurodam, Rand Yasin, and the director of the Peace Palace, Iljan van Hardevelt, buried the time capsule in the garden of the Peace Palace. The time capsule will not be opened again for another 125 years. September 21 is the International Day of Peace. To mark the occasion, various activities will be taking place in and around the Peace Palace from today throughout the weekend. The Just Peace weekend starts tonight, September 19, with a movie night. A documentary is currently being shown in the Peace Palace Auditorium highlighting the important work of the World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) and the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change. These young leaders have been campaigning for an Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of states' regarding climate change. In addition, an exhibition in the Visitors Centre highlights the impact of climate change on the lives and future of young people around the world. On Saturday, September 21, 125 children will join the Mayor of The Hague in depositing a time capsule with their peace wishes for the future in the garden of the Peace Palace. The following day, September 22nd, the Peace Palace will open its doors to anyone interested in international law (tickets must be reserved in advance). In a 75-minute programme, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the Carnegie Foundation will present their work and the history of the Peace Palace and its organizations. We look forward to welcoming all visitors and thank Just Peace The Hague, The Hague Humanity Hub, World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) and Gemeente Den Haag for the great organization and cooperation.
