Choosing a specialization is a key moment in every (Biotechnology) student’s journey. Last week, we welcomed a group of second-year Biotechnology students and their lecturers from Hogeschool Inholland Amsterdam for an excursion at Planet-B.io and dsm-firmenich. As they prepare to select their focus in white or green biotechnology, this visit offered them valuable insights into the practice of white biotech. After an engaging presentation about Planet B.io by Fenneke Anderluh-Jolink, the students then embarked on a tour with DAB.bio , where they got an up-close look at their groundbreaking technology. This was followed by insightful pitches from two fast-growing biotech companies, both rooted in white biotechnology: Paques Biomaterials and Vivici. After lunch, the students explored the state-of-the-art labs at dsm-firmenich during a guided tour, followed by presentations by Wouter van Winden and Cees Sagt. We wrapped up with a lively discussion over drinks, leaving the students enthusiastic and grateful. We hope this excursion provided them with inspiration and a clearer view of the possibilities within white biotechnology. Who knows? Perhaps some of these talented individuals will shape the future of this field. Thank you to Inholland Amsterdam for joining us, and to all the companies and individuals who contributed to this inspiring day! #PlanetBio #Biotechnology #TalentDevelopment #WhiteBiotech

Cradle raises $73M to revolutionize protein engineering with AI. This milestone is a testament not only to their groundbreaking work in AI-powered protein engineering but also to their ability to assemble a stellar team that combines R&D expertise with a product and commercial mindset. With this Series B funding, Cradle’s total raised exceeds $100M (€95.2M). The Dutch-Swiss company will use the funds to expand its wet lab to generate additional datasets that will be used to train Cradle’s models to address a growing array of challenges and modalities. Congratulations to Stef van Grieken, Elise de Reus, Harmen van Rossum, Jelle Prins, Eli Bixby, and the entire Cradle team on this achievement! 🎉
💰 I'm proud to announce that one year after announcing our Series A, we have now raised a $73M Series B led by IVP, with continued backing from Index Ventures and Kindred Capital VC. This brings our total funding to over $100M! In the last year, we've shown that our AI can dramatically accelerate protein engineering. We've signed major partnerships with companies such as Novo Nordisk, Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, Novonesis, Grifols, and many more- with partners consistently rating results at least 8 out of 10! The results have been exciting: we've grown to over 21 customers with 31 proteins being developed, delivering 1.2x-12x faster development with up to 90% cost reduction. We also have benchmarked our models against the state-of-the-art. We believe it's crucial for the world to get really good at engineering proteins to improve human and planetary health. Proteins are nature's molecular machines, enabling everything from life-changing therapeutics and sustainable materials to animal-free foods and eco-friendly chemicals. The challenge has been clear: developing new protein-based products through traditional methods is time-intensive, costly, and error-prone. Scientists often spend years running experiments, using millions of dollars in resources, with no guarantee of success. Our platform changes this by enabling scientists to leverage generative AI models with experimental data. Through continuous learning from experimental results, our models become increasingly adept at engineering sequences that achieve desired properties and functions. With this funding, we're: Expanding our wet lab for additional protein modalities 👩🏻🔬 Growing our engineering team for more complex challenges 👨🏻💻 Scaling operations to reach more scientific teams 🚀 We're also excited to welcome Sam Partovi as our Chief Commercial Officer and 40th team member! As Alex Lim, General Partner at IVP put it: "Biology is one of the domains where generative AI can have the biggest positive impact and Cradle is leading the way with its pioneering approach to protein design as a digital service. Given the costs associated with drug discovery or similar fields of research, any efficiencies at the R&D stage will translate to both major financial returns for customers and significant real-world benefits for humanity." Our AI is easy to use via our web-app, and we're excited to put it in the hands of millions of scientists to help them build great products that can solve some of humanity's biggest challenges. Last Thursday, Planet-B.io had the pleasure of welcoming the investment teams from InnovationQuarter and Invest-NL to the Biotech Campus Delft. Both organizations play a crucial role in our community, and it’s always inspiring to meet in person and showcase the latest developments. InnovationQuarter has been a trusted partner since our inception, collaborating with us to drive Innovation, Internationalization, and Investment in 'Biotech for Sustainable Production.' Special thanks to Aisling Foley for sharing your entrepreneurial journey and the business potential of microbial production of a heparin substitute by ExCulture. The Invest-NL team, focused on investing in agrifood, biobased, and circular solutions, joined for an afternoon of presentations and discussions. They also experienced the newly released tabletop FAST bioreactor from DAB.bio and enjoyed a delicious plant-based omelet and other high protein products from Proeon Foods. It is a true privilege to be surrounded by innovative companies, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 regional and national investment agencies, and see the power of an innovation ecosystem in action. Together, we’re shaping the future of biotechnology! #Biotechnology #Innovation #Collaboration #Sustainability

From October 14 to October 18, Planet-B.io welcomed 17 Food & Process Technology bachelor students from De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences for a pressure cooker week. During this intense week, the students worked on a case study provided by DAB.bio , where they were challenged with a deep dive into various extractants to determine which would be most suitable for the production of Food Flavours & Fragrances with DAB.bio’s FAST™ extractive fermentation technology. Not only did the students get a flavour of real-life challenges currently being researched at DAB, each day the students also visited a different company at the Biotech Campus Delft. From exploring the labs of startups like Foamlab and DAB to touring the pilot facility of Plant One Delft BV, the students got a good view of the biotech ecosystem and gaining insight into the innovative work happening at the Biotech Campus Delft. Another highlight of the week was a day spent with a dsm-firmenich scientist, with whom they made yogurt and conducted various measurements in the Education lab, a Planet-B.io initiative. The experience was closed off with a tour of dsm-firmenich’s R&D facilities at the Rosalind Franklin Biotechnology Center. The week was concluded with presentations of their case study findings, followed by drinks to celebrate a successful and rewarding experience. With many students inquiring about internship opportunities, it was clear that the week achieved its goal of sparking enthusiasm for careers in the biotech sector. This pressure cooker week exemplifies Planet-B.io’s commitment to bridging the gap between education and industry by providing students with the opportunity to work on actual projects in our labs.
