BIONEER Project: Scaled-Up Production Of Next-Generation Carbohydrate-Derived Building Blocks To Enhance The Competitiveness Of A Sustainable European Chemicals Industry The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) innovation project #BIONEER officially started on June 1st, 2024, and over its 48-month project period, it will demonstrate and advance the potential of various #lignocellulosic biomass carbohydrate-derived components to replace #fossilbased functional #buildingblocks in the #furniture #coatings and #personalcare sectors. The project aims to establish its route to market by showcasing its application potential. BIONEER Project focuses on utilizing low-cost, sustainably sourced lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock to produce novel platform chemicals for challenging industrial sectors to decarbonize, such as liquid plastics used in personal care and coatings. The project moves beyond first-generation carbohydrate-derived chemicals, leveraging the biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry, and process expertise of the consortium to scale up the production of a range of novel monomeric and polymeric building blocks that allow for important additional functionalities to be conferred to biobased chemicals. It’s exciting to see more research on the valorisation of waste biomass from fermentation processes. Traditionally, much of this biomass is incinerated, sent to landfills, or used as animal feed. Researchers at Teesside University and the University of Leeds are transforming spent biomass into "char-based materials," which can be utilized in the production of bioplastics and other bioproducts. As meat and dairy analogue production using fermentation and cell culture processes continues to scale, innovations like this will be important in reducing costs, improving sustainability, and creating a circular bioeconomy. https://lnkd.in/eCdzQA24 #fermentation #circularbioeconomy

🚀 Excited to share two recent publications from our research group! 🌱📚 1️⃣ Harnessing non-edible Quercus incana seeds for sustainable biodiesel production. - Published in Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments (Elsevier). - This study explores the use of Quercus incana seeds as a high-yield feedstock for biodiesel, using a bio-fabricated Al₂O₃ nanocatalyst. We achieved a 97.6% biodiesel yield, contributing to greener energy solutions and improved waste management practices. 2️⃣ Astaxanthin biosynthesis for functional food development and space missions - Published in Critical Reviews in Biotechnology (Taylor & Francis). - This review focuses on astaxanthin (AXT), an antioxidant and natural pigment, highlighting its biosynthesis using synthetic biology and its potential applications in functional foods and space exploration. The review also covers different natural sources of AXT and discusses its future in biomanufacturing and human health. So excited that our work on the development of an innovative platform for bio-based polymers production from renewable feedstocks such as lignin and wheat bran has been published! An optimized growing cell approach using an engineered E. coli strain in bioreactor for the production of the high industrial value cis,cis-muconic acid, a building block used to produce a fully bioderived polymer with rubber-like properties. Unfortunately, 98% of this biomass is #wasted, ending up in landfills, incinerators, or decomposing in open dumps. 👀 Only 7.2% of the global economy is circular.😑 However, the 🚀 EU has the potential to transform this bio-waste into a wide array of 🌱bio-based products, such as bioplastics, biochemicals, biofertilizers, biomaterials, biofuels, and products for the food and feed industries. 👩🌾🌾 This is Brilian’s mission! We aim to promote #circular and #sustainable #cooperative #business #models in #rural #areas, empowering primary producers to become active participants in the supply chain. Over the next four years, we will validate ten bio-based value chains using raw materials like cardoon, safflower, and sunflower (in Italy), potato (in Spain), and rapeseed (in Denmark) and produce a wider range of high-value-added bio-products, such as bioplastics, biolubricants, proteins, bioadhesives, bioherbicides, products for animal feed or the cosmetic sector. 💡 Patent "Optimization of waste treatment using black soldier fly larvae" This discovery concerns a treatment of wastewater containing biodegradable organic substances with black soldier fly larvae, with the recovery of resources from the larval biomass produced. The invention overcomes the high mortality typical of their use in a liquid environment, ensuring optimal environmental conditions for growth thus increasing treatment efficiency. 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - Treatment of wastewater with a high organic load, e.g. discharges from the food industry (wineries, juices production, etc.) - Circular economy - from organic waste to use of larvae as animal feed - Protein extraction from larval biomass - Extraction of lipids from larval biomass for biodiesel or lubricants 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 - Recovery of both material and energy resources from the larval biomass produced - Absence of aeration systems - Minimisation of solid waste typical of purification processes (sludge, digestate) - Targeted treatment of the liquid substrate, minimising process residues - Survival rate of larvae comparable to that of treatment with solid matrices 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝟒 First batch and continuous prototypes were validated and tested in laboratory, demonstrating the invention's technical feasibility.
