We are still buzzing from our successful side event at the UNEP INC5 Global Plastic Treaty negotiations, that we hosted together with Greenpeace USA. The Plastic Health Council presented the new episode of our series 'Scientists Speak Out,' this time featuring Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad. Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/e3CF7Ayg Special thanks to John Hocevar, Jane Muncke, Irene Hofmeijer and Hellen Kahaso Dena for making this event such a succes!

Over ons
Plastic Soup Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Amsterdam. Our slogan is ‘No plastic in our water or our bodies'. We fight the plastic soup at its source and therefore, we focus on three main goals: 1. prevent plastic from ending up in the environment 2. share knowledge about the health risks related to plastics and plastic additives 3. achieve an absolute reduction in the production and use of plastic. The full Scientists Speak Out episode is out now! In a world first, research led by Professor Dr. Thais Mauad and Dr. Luis Fernando Amato-Lourenco from the University of Sao Paulo and Freie University Berlin - supported by Plastic Soup Foundation - found microplastics in the olfactory bulb, located at the bottom of the brain. Scientific evidence increasingly shows that plastic pollution, along with its toxic additives, devastates ecosystems, worsens the global health crises, and can lead to premature mortality. In this century, macro-, micro-, and nanoplastic pollution is rising sharply, and the public health risks are multiplying. Quite simply, life is becoming plastic. We can facilitate direct connections between policymakers and these pioneering scientists That's why Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad presented her research today at the side event Plastic Soup Foundation hosted today with Greenpeace USA at #INC5. We also produced two documentaries titled Scientists Speak Out. In the first, Austrian professor Lukas Kenner reveals the disturbing connection between nanoplastics and cancer cell growth, even cautioning of a potential cancer epidemic. The second, featuring professor Thais Mauad is out now! Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/etXAcukX #plastic #microplastic #health #scientistsspeakout #inc5 #unep

PSF's Jeroen Dagevos is in Busan, South Korea right now for the fifth Global Plastic Treaty negotiations of the UNEP, also known as #INC5. Later this week, Plastic Soup Foundation will host a side event at the conference, where Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad will present her research on microplastics in our brains. Listen to Jeroen explain why INC5 is so important by clicking on this link: https://lnkd.in/eXGSpGiE

Plastic is a threat to human health! Scientist Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad from the University of São Paulo found micro- and nanoplastics in the human brain, but she also recorded how these particles damaged our DNA structure and lead to diseases. This, to her, is a cause for great concern. We interviewed her in Brazil for the next episode of our series of portraits called ‘Scientists Speak Out’. This video is a snippet out of the full episode, which launches on the 29th of November. We visited Prof. Dr. Mauad at the University of São Paulo to talk more about her recent discovery of microplastic in the human brain and the detrimental effects in relation to diseases. She strongly believes in the need for a comprehensive Global Plastic Treaty and urges the UN delicates at the INC5 meeting that start tomorrow, to keep the health of their citizens in mind. See her full request here: https://lnkd.in/dua2afsK Stay tuned, because the full episode will launch on Nov. 29. Do you support Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad’s message? For the next episode of our series of portraits ‘Scientists Speak Out’ we interviewed Prof. Dr. Thais Mauad from the University of São Paulo, who recently found microplastics in the human brain and discovered that these plastics come from everyday items like our clothes and packaging. In this episode Prof. Dr. Mauad talks more about her research and her conclusions. You are looking at a first teaser of this interview: https://lnkd.in/dv3twwhQ Stay tuned, because the full episode will launch on Nov. 29 when Prof. Dr. Mauad will present her findings at the UNEP INC5 Global Plastic Treaty negotiations in South Korea. #plastichealthrisk #globalplastictreatynegotiations #microplastics #plasticsoupfoundation #scientistsspeakout

🌍 A Successful One Planetary Health Symposium at ARTIS! 🌱 For the first time, in collaboration with ARTIS, Plastic Soup Foundation hosted the One Planetary Health Symposium. This inspiring event brought together leading scientists to present their groundbreaking research on the dangers of (micro- and nano)plastics to our health, ecosystems, and planet. The symposium also provided a platform for innovative businesses showcasing alternatives to plastics. Through meaningful dialogue, we aimed to inspire, challenge, and motivate each other to drive systemic change and take impactful action. Together, we are committed to creating solutions that truly make a difference. We are gearing up for the first edition of the One Planetary Health Symposium today in Amsterdam. We joined hands with ARTIS to organise this unique event, a collaboration that makes absolute sense to us. In the video linked, PSF's director Maria Westerbos talks to ARTIS director Rembrandt Sutorius about the things ARTIS and PSF have in common and why it's so important to tell the story of microplastics together. A big shout out to Love Fuel, the newest member of the Plastic Soup Business Community. LoveFuel creates sustainable apparel with designs that ask big question and spark conversation, while giving back to non-profits, charities, and nature. As you can see from the photos, we can now confirm that their t-shirts are also incredibly comfortable to wear. The featured t-shirt, is the new t-shirts of the month, called ‘Wake Up World’. About this theme founders Emile Haffmans & Antonia Haffmans say: We’ve been collectively hitting the global snooze alarm for too long. This shirt was designed to awaken yourself, your community, and your planet.’ Part of the proceeds of this shirt will be donated to PSF. We are very grateful to our new partner for this initiative! So go check them out and fuel them with some love ;)
